Astrid POV:
My body ached with the sore muscles that I've overworked... again. I winced at the torn calluses on my hands from the handle of my axe. Blood stains were within the groves of the strong wood and within the gaps that were from splinters that were stuck in my hands.
"Ah, gods", I hiss as I use my teeth to pull the spikes from my broken skin.
"Astrid?", I hear a step-"clank" approaching from behind me.
"Hey", I say as I continue to work at my wounded hands.
"Are you okay? Stormfly is passed out exhausted by the pond", he comes over and gasps at the sight in front of him.
"Astrid...", he says in a low tone.
"Don't..."
"You over did it again", he states. Not even a question.
"I'm fine. Just another day of training", I say as he comes and sits by me. The curious night fury sniffs at my bloody hands and licks them gently.
"Egh, thanks Toothless", I pat his nose and he gurgles in welcoming.
"Astrid you can't keep pushing yourself like this", Hiccup says as he rubs my back.
"Hiccup... it's just what I do. I like to be prepared for anything", I roll my eyes.
"Well being prepared and running yourself into the ground are two totally different things"
Now I'm slightly irritated at his annoying and sweet attempt to be concerned with me, because that's just who he is. But I am grown and I know I can take care of myself.
"Don't you think I know that, Knucklehead", I snort and punch his arm.
"Agh", he hold it in slight pain.
"I'm fine, Hiccup", I stand up and walk over to my tired dragon.
"Astrid... I just don't want you getting hurt", he follows me.
"I won't get hurt", I say not looking back.
My deadly Nadder sits up in alertness upon my approach.
"Come on girl, let's go", I say as she stands up and I jump on her saddle.
"Astrid! Where are you going?", the boy I adore deeply says awkwardly from his spot on the ground. The stubborn pit in my stomach feels like a rock that's keeping my childish motives in place as I pat Stormfly's neck to take off.
I didn't care. This is how I've always prepared for things in life and I'm not about to change it. Berk needs well trained dragon riders to protect it.
The wind begins to make my braid whip behind me as I inhale the spring air.
"Barrel roll!", I shout and she obeys.
We quickly spin through a set of seastacks.
