The atmosphere tonight, she thought, was absolutely electric. With the students gradually arriving back in town, there were so many sexy men making their way around. This was going to be a great night. She needed a man right now, to spoil her, to make her feel womanly, to take her home with him. And tonight she was going to get what she wanted. She always did.
"Look Claire!" shouted Baby, excitedly. "It's Zamian! Hey, Zamian! Over here!"
Claire saw the tall handsome guy stop, wave, and slowly make his way to the table where she and Baby were sitting. His grey, shadow-like sidekick, Paul, closely followed him. Baby stood up, smiled, and walked towards them.
Claire wondered just what it was like to be so attractive to lads. Baby always seemed to attract the worthwhile guys, while Claire was left with the hangers-on. This puzzled her. She was the one with money. She had always thought that she had dazzling looks, and was prettier than Baby. She certainly had a better figure. Baby was short, and this made her look dumpy. Additionally, Claire's shoulder length blonde bob was much more appealing than Baby's tatty brown mop, and her clothes were much more fashionable.
She had a terrible feeling that Zamian was intending to ask Baby out. Why not her? She adored Zamian. He was wonderful. She was jealous of the fact that he and her best friend were becoming so close. One of us is going to end up with a broken heart, thought Claire, and I will make sure it will not be me.
Beginning to formulate her action plan, Claire watched Baby conversing with Zamian and Paul a few metres away. Envy crept into her heart and worked through her lungs, coming out of her mouth as malice.
"Hey Baby!" she shouted. "There's that student you got off with on Friday! Over there!"
Baby spun around with a hurt expression on her face. Zamian looked horrified. Good, thought Claire. She does not deserve Zamian.
Claire knew, however, that there was some attraction between the two. Zamian did like Baby. She would have to think of a more sophisticated plan. Maybe she could use someone, to get at Zamian, make him jealous. That was if anyone actually noticed her tonight. She could not understand why no-one had yet. She was wearing a very short leather skirt and a shirt, which was very tight and barely covered her chest. She lit up a cigarette.
Claire was desperate for Zamian, and decided that she would give anything in the world for a guy to ask her out, here tonight, in front of Zamian. How useful it would be. He would get really jealous, and forget about Baby's alleged charms. Any man at all. She did not care who.
Well, perhaps she did care who. Anyone but Paul Williams. The guy she'd been forced to spend most of her early childhood with. He was the one exception. If he asked her out, she thought that she might have to vomit all over him. He was gruesome. So unattractive. He smelt funny as well. Claire knew that if she was presented with that situation it would be a very useful way of getting to Zamian, given how close they were, but she just could not endure Paul. Staring into the distance she could just about make him out. He was now sitting on a chair sulking, every now and then looking this way. Hopefully, thought Claire, he fancies Baby, and if he says anything, she will give him such a hard slap it will hospitalise him.
Claire looked away, and turned her gaze back to Baby and Zamian. She was angry. Baby was supposed to be her best friend. She knew about Claire's passion for Zamian.
After a few minutes, she noticed Baby heading off in the direction of the toilets. To her delight, she saw Zamian make his way towards her.
"Hi Zamian," she said, after making sure Baby was a safe distance away, and winked seductively.
