Chapter 3: Select

"I have a funny feeling Eggman isn't done. It's never that easy to turn the tide."
 Sonic gave a concern. "But we'll sort that out later. Let's get those Emeralds somewhere safe."

"Where can we store the Emeralds?" Tails asked. "And we crushed his army with his own ship. If we want to finish the job, we should destroy his base too."

"We need to get the Emeralds safe first. We can't go around with them in our pockets." Sonic began thinking. "Hop on me, I'll take us home." Sonic lowered himself. Tails nodded, getting on Sonic's shoulders. His tails rested over Sonic's quills, knowing it wouldn't hurt him. "Hang on tight, buddy!" Sonic sped through the city, taking the long way to the Mystic Ruins, back to Tails house. In the workshop, Sonic placed the Emeralds in a safe place. "Phew, glad that's over." He looked at Tails. "You okay, buddy? You look a little worse for wear."

"I'm... I'll be okay. Let's finish the job." Tails gave a weak smile.

"I don't think Eggman will cause us any problems for a while. The rest of the team are cleaning up anyway. You're resting, and that's an order from your team leader." Sonic smiled, patting Tails on the head.

"No, we need to-" Tails was interrupted by a knock at the door. Team Rose and Chaotix came to check on them.

"We'll take care of it!" The Chaotix volunteered. "We'll finish the job for ya."

"You sure were brave, Tails." Cream smiled. "Going into that fire must have been scary." She blushed

"Okay guys, give him some room and let him rest. He's the real hero today." Sonic prepared for a speech. "He found an Emerald and saved lots of people. Here's the plan. Team Dark will search the desert to see if Eggman has any bases there. Knuckles will accompany Team Rose and see if anyone else needs help in the city. Team Chaotix, Eggman mentioned something about having more than an army. See if you can find out what he meant by that. Check his previous bases, as some may be operational again. I'll stay here with Tails and search for more Emeralds with the tools we have here." Sonic briefed, giving everyone a task.

"Before we go..." Cream spoke and gave Tails a kiss on the cheek with a blush. Tails did his best not to blush or cringe. After that everyone left to do their assigned task.

Sonic waved goodbye as they went out of view. He tended to Tails. "You okay? Be honest. You took a beating out there." He was very concerned. Tails closed his eyes and began to faint. "TAILS!" Sonic quickly caught him, carried him to his bed, and laid him down, sitting by his side. Tails lay there. Dirty, beaten, but alive. He breathed easy as he was unconscious. Sonic made Tails comfortable in the bed, tucking him in, and waiting for him to come back around.

Amy returned to update Sonic an hour later while Tails was still out. "Sonic, the city is okay. The fire department and health professionals are there now, doing what they can to help everyone. Team Dark is still combing the desert, and the Chaotix are attacking where Eggman was last seen as we speak." She briefed Sonic. "What happened to Tails?" She asked, worried.

"He took a beating, don't worry. He's fine, he just needs to rest. I'll keep you updated." Sonic clenched a fist and a tear formed on his eye, but he didn't let Amy see it. "I will make Eggman pay for what he did to my friends!"

"Sonic..." Amy took Sonic outside for a private talk. "I've... seen how you are with Tails. Do you love him?" She asked forwardly, holding back tears.

Sonic was taken off guard, but he knew he had to be honest. "Yes, Amy. I do love him. I know you're in love with me, and I'm sorry I didn't tell you... I couldn't. I'm so sorry, Amy." Sonic had a downtrodden face, knowing he hurt his friend.

Amy sobbed softly. "I've... chased you all these years, only for you to deny me... So why am I not more upset?" She asked herself.

Sonic hugged her. "I don't know, Amy." He lifted her head. "But I know you'll find someone one day. Someone you deserve." He tried to sound convincing.

Amy hugged back, but not in her usual crushing way. "Just be sure to tell him everything you think about him. And I mean everything." She sobbed softly.

"I will. I promise." Sonic hugged Amy for a while, letter her cry on his shoulder. "I'm sorry." He whispered.

"No... It's okay... I'll be okay..." Amy took deep breaths. "I... I think I'll talk to Cream. But she's going to be heart broken too. I'm sure you noticed she has a crush on Tails." Amy pointed out, trying to suppress her crying.

"I did. I feel awful, Amy. I can't apologize enough. I hope we can still be friends, though." Sonic offered.

"Of course." She hugged him. "I know this sounds like a friend zone comment, but we'll always be friends." She smiled.

Sonic gave her one last hug. "Look after Cream. She won't take this lightly." He warned

"I will." Amy smiled. "Send me a text when Tails wakes up. I'm sure Cream will have a few words for him." Amy left, taking the shoes she bought for Sonic with her.

Sonic returned to Tails side and fell asleep beside him.
