Chapter 4: Stick

Tails awoke the next morning with a cough. His head was red, and he did not look well. Sonic stood by him. "You okay? You don't look too hot."

"Sick..." Tails head plopped on the pillow. He coughed hard and the color drained from his fur. He was a sick kit.

"Anything I can do for you, buddy?" Sonic offered to his sick buddy. "Name it and I'll do it."

"Ice... Soup... Tea... Love..." Tails rasped out.

"I can do all that for you." Sonic smiled, first getting the ice for Tails head. He then made tea and soup. "There ya go. Made with love." He smiled.

Tails gave a pained smile, placing the ice on his burning head. He breathed easy and released a tear. "Bad dream..."

Sonic sat on the bed. "It's okay, buddy. I'm here now." He gave a smile. "Everyone's worried about you." He avoided making a pun.

Tails nodded, blowing on his soup to cool it down. "I doubt that. Not Eggman. Not Shadow. Not Knuckles." He attempted humor but coughed hard.

"True." Sonic laughed. "But I was. I was worried sick about you." He gave the pun that was inevitable.

"Not funny." Tails sneezed into his arm.

Sonic watches Tails eat his soup. "I was... scared, Tails. Scared that I was going to lose you." He gave honest talk.

"Well, I'm still here." Tails gave a pained smile and sipped his tea. "Eggman can't get rid of me that easily." Sonic tried to hold back tears, but one slipped down his cheek. "Sonic... Just smile." Tails took Sonic's line.

Sonic tried to smile, putting on a brave face. However, seeing the one he loved in pain caused him too much grief. "Tails... There's something I've been meaning to tell you." Sonic began.

"Can it wait until I feel better?" Tails asked with a loud but cute sneeze.

"Sure it can wait. You rest up, I'm gonna scout around for a while. Anything you need before I go?" Sonic asked.

"Some air would be nice." Tails pointed to the window.

Sonic opened it. "I won't be long." He left. He went up high, but not to search. Sonic just sat there, thinking about Tails.

Tails suddenly felt something in his heart. He felt love, but it wasn't for Cream. It was for Sonic. He took this time to think about all of their adventures together, and what might happen next if he chose to accept those feelings. After a short coughing fit, he closed his eyes and went to sleep.

Sonic couldn't stop thinking about what could have happened, how he could have lost Tails. He decided that Tails had to know how Sonic felt. Whatever the reaction, he had to know. As he watched the sun set, he spoke. "I love you Tails. It's always been you." For a moment, the setting sun took the appearance of Tails, but only for a moment, seeming to torture Sonic more.

Tails slept peacefully, dreaming about decisions and the past. How his heart seemed to always beat for Sonic. He just never realized it.

"I have to tell him!" Sonic decided. He dashed home but hesitated at the door. He heard Tails soft snores as he slept . Sonic crept on slowly, so as not to wake Tails. "Sleep well, pal." Sonic went to the roof to sleep.

The next morning arrived, and Tails awoke feeling a cold breeze from the window. He shivered. "Brr..."

Sonic awoke moments later. Also cold, he vaulted through the open window. "Morning, Tails. Sleep well?" He shivered, but nodded. Sonic then closed the window. "Tails... I gotta tell you something. Something you need to know." He spoke seriously.

"Hold on, Sonic." Tails halted him. "Is my fur color back?" He asked. He still felt bad, but better than yesterday.

"You're much better, Tails. Even your bruising has gone down." Sonic gave a sigh of relief.

Tails smiled. "I have something to say too." Tails scooted over, and pat the empty space next to him, beckoning Sonic.

Sonic sat next to Tails. "Who's going first?"

"You, since this is the second time you said you have something to tell me." Tails gave his logic.

"Okay. Here goes." Sonic took a deep breath. "We've been friends for so long now, and you're my best friend." He paused, gathering his thoughts. "What I'm trying to say is... I have feelings for you. Strong feelings." He said simply.

"You also have strong arms." Tails teased, squeezing Sonic's muscles. "Continue."

"I... I love you Tails." Sonic admitted.

"Of course you do." Tails teased more. "We're brothers. Brother's are suppose to love each other." He giggled.

Sonic held Tails hands. "No, Tails. I'm in love with you. I want to be with you forever! I want to hold you. I want to... to kiss you." Sonic blushed, putting his heart on the line. Tails widened his eyes and began breathing heavily. "I know it's unlikely you feel the same way, but I need to tell you how I felt." Sonic looked at Tails.

"Sonic..." Tails was struggling for air. "I need CPR!" He then breathed normally. "You take my breath away." He giggled

Sonic breathed easy, seeing Tails was joking. "Tails..." He held Tails hand, rubbing them before slowly moving in for a kiss.

Tails hugged Sonic tightly before he could kiss him. "Before I went to sleep last night, I realized... My heart beats for you, Sonic." His namesakes wrapped around Sonic. "You've always been there for me, and now I want to be there for you. When you're sad, when you're alone, when you're confused. Just like you were always there for me." Tails began to cry. "I love you too, Sonic! Let's spend the rest of our lives together!" He cried happy tears.

Sonic started to tear up as well. "I've been feeling this way for so long. It's always been you Tails. It couldn't be anyone else. I'll protect you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you!" Sonic cried. Tails closed the gap, and kissed Sonic on the lips happily. Sonic kissed back deeply. He rubbed along Tails tails, feeling the fluffiness and soft fur on them.

Tails broke the kiss, his heart beating loudly. "Sonic..."

"Yes, Tails?" Sonic gazed into his eyes, his own heart racing as he runs his hands along Tails' fur.

"We should take this slow." Tails breathed, his loins roaring with lust and testosterone, but he knew rushing this may make it bad.

Sonic pulled away. "You're right. You're still recovering anyway. But, we can hug right?" Sonic double checked before continuing.

"And kiss, and cuddle." Tails purred, hugging Sonic. He was in pure bliss, and purred with love.

"I'll always keep you safe, Tails. I promise you that." Sonic held Tails tight. He could feel his heart racing next to Tails.

"And I'll always be right behind you. I'll always watch your back. I'll love you as long as you love me." Tails kissed Sonic.

The kiss was a long one. "I'll always love you, Tails. I promise." Sonic gave a pinky.

"Until the end." Tails entwined their pinkies, making it a promise.
