I'm walking through the streets of town. I'm keeping my head down in case a hunter or someone might recognize me. The only way I see Zero and I getting out of this is if we have someone help us however we don't know anyone outside of the school.
With a sigh I shove my hands in my pockets. As I walk, I hear a familiar voice behind me. "Is that my new partner?" I turn to see Adrian standing behind me with a smile on his face. "I'm surprised to see you again."
I look at him suspiciously then my eyes go wide. "You!" I spin around and run up to him.
"Did you forget who I am already? My feelings are hurt, it hasn't even been a day." He says and puts his hands over his heart in mock pain.
"Do you have a car?" I ask.
"Do I look like a millionaire?" Adrian asks with his brow raised.
My enthusiasm drops and I step away from him with a groan. "You're no help."
"What do you need a car for?" He asks getting closer to me.
I scratch my arm as I try to come up with a lie. "A friend and I are trying to get out of town for a few days but the next town is five hours away."
Adrian thinks then says, "Well, I may not have a car but I might have a solution to your problem."
"Which is...?" I press.
"I know that Cross Academy keeps horses. I might be able to get you in to take one."
I look at Adrian with a blank expression. "Is that the only solution you have?"
"Hey man, I may be extraordinarily brilliant but I don't have all the answers." He says.
"But shouldn't someone that brilliant have all the answers?"
Adrian pats me on the head like a child. "Hush. Now do you want the horses or not?"
I take a breath and weigh my options. By now Yagari should be at the Hunters Association giving the leader the rundown of things. With that he should also be staying there for the night to receive orders. I weed out My dad as a problem the focus on Cross. Yagari probably asked him to keep an eye out if Zero and I return but I don't think he'll be walking around the campus to know and I doubt he'll tell anyone about this whole ordeal, maybe the night class but I don't think they'd care much about two runaway students. However, how the hell would we sneak a horse off of campus?
"Do you have a definite way to get a horse out of the gates?" I ask.
"I do, but a true magician never reveals his secrets." Adrian winks at me.
"Then I'm out." I shrug and start to walk away.
"What? Wait!" Adrian catches up to me and pulls me to a stop. "Fine, I'll tell you the plan."
I smile. "I'm glad we came to an agreement."
"On one condition." Adrian says. "When you come back, you owe me one evening with you."
"Really?" I look at him to see if he's joking but his face is serious.
"I told you, you're a beautiful woman. And besides, I think we get along swimmingly. You also owe me." He smirks a little.
"Okay, deal." I say. I don't see myself coming back or running into him after this so why not.
"Very good." He says. "Now, where is your friend. I'd like them to be present while I explain the plan."
I freeze. I left Zero over an hour ago, I have no idea if he's still there. "Okay," I say less than confidently. "Let's go."
I lead Adrian through the streets to get to the building Zero and I were in. "Did you guys run away from your parents or something?" He asks when we walk through the abandoned part of town.
"Something like that." I say and keep walking.
After a while we come to the building and begin to walk in. As I get closer to the room, I hear panting and moans of pain. My Hunter instincts kick in and I slow down. I look at Adrian who seems confused by the sounds. "Stay here, I'm going to check it out." I tell him.
He surprisingly stays which puts me at ease a little. One less thing to worry about if I come head to head with a vampire. I pull out my small knife and push open the door slowly. I peek in and see Zero in a dark corner of the room on the floor. He's scratching at his neck and chest, rolling in pain. I drop the knife and run to his side, falling to my knees to hold him. "Zero!"
He feels cold and his eyes barely open when I call his name. "(Y/N)..." He says weakly.
"Zero, you're going to be okay..." I look around for anything that could help him but he grabs a hold of my hand and opens his mouth like he's going to say something. "What is it? Zero, what do you need?"
His grip on my hand tightens on mine, but too tight. "Z-Zero?" His eyes open and they're red, his mouth open to reveal sharp fangs. My adrenaline kicks in and I push Zero off me. He rolls to his side and I jump up, looking for the knife I dropped. Before I can get to it, Zero leaps at me, sending both us crashing onto the ground. Zero pins me down, holding my hands above my head. "Zero stop!" I shout and kick him where it hurts. He rolls off of me in pain and I quickly get up, me eyes going directly to where the knife is. But its gone.
Instead, Adrian is there holding it looking menacingly at Zero. "Talia, get out of here!" He shouts. Zero's attention turns to him and he gets up, getting ready to attack Adrian.
"No, it's not what you think!" I yell.
"Get out!" he shouts again.
Zero growls and lunges at Adrian.
