Your New Best Friend
Chapter 2: There Was an Attempt
Y/N's POV
To be honest, it's really quite simple what I should be doing in this kind of situation. There's a stranger there crying. I should just leave her alone. Just ignore her. It's not my problem anyway. At least, that's what I would have thought but now, something is stopping me, some sort of feeling. It's a complicated feeling. Maybe it's pity or sympathy. No, it's not. It's empathy. I know how it feels to be down in the dumps way too much to just let anyone else feel that way. With a confused but determined mind, I step out of my hiding spot.
"Hey." I start cautiously. "What's wrong?"
She stood up, wipe her tears and turn around to face me. This is the first time I get to inspect the girl's face properly. She has magenta eyes but what are more interesting are the three black lines running down from each of her eyes. Then, something else catches my eyes. On her chest, there is a pink upside-down heart-shaped gemstone which means she isn't a human after all. She's a gem! Well, that explains a lot.
"It's..." She replies. "...none of your business!"
My expectation is low but holy crap, I didn't expect her to shout at me like that. Well, what to do now? Ugh, my lack of social interaction is starting to get back at me.
"Um, okay then." I manage to form a sentence. "If you need someone to talk to, I'll be..!"
I don't even get to finish my sentence before a flying pink knuckle hit me right in the face.
"I said... it's none of your business!" She shout.
I was in the air for a few moments before falling in the snow. It's not strong enough to cause any serious injury but it sure is strong enough to hurt my feeling.
"Fine then!" I shout back. "Suit yourself!"
I stomp back toward the cabin in a rage. I could've understood if she wanted to be alone but jeez, there's no need to get so aggressive.
Back in my cozy cabin, I hang my black winter coat, light the fireplace and make myself a nice cup of hot chocolate. Everything is perfect. Well, except for... I look out of the window at the darkening sky. It's going to be real cold outside soon. I took a sip out of my drink and peer into the dark swirling liquid.
"Stop thinking about her." I tell myself "Why are you so worried? She probably lives nearby. There is no way she's going to stay outside in this kind of season... right? In case you forget, she punched you right in the face the last time you talk to her."
Ugh, I guess there's no reason not to double check. I wear my coat again and head out toward the lake. Surprise, surprise! She's still there, the pink blob of sadness.
"Um, aren't you going home?" I ask while hiding behind a tree, for obvious reason. "It's going to get dark soon."
"Leave me alone." She replies bitterly.
"Did you not have any place to stay at? My cabin is just west of here if you need shelter."
She stays silent and I don't think that means yes. I go back to my cabin and take off my coat again.
Well, I did everything I can. I guess that'll clear my conscious. Apparently, I keep on making wrong guess today because the next thing I'm doing is brewing another cup of hot chocolate and rolling up a spare blanket. I hold both of it in my hands and start heading toward the lake... again.
"Ugh, this isn't going to end well, is it?" I mumble to myself. "Whatever, I'll reap what I sow."
I approach the girl slowly but nearer than I have ever been before.
"Hey, want some hot chocolate?" I offer the cup I am holding.
"I said... Leave me alone!" She howls as she hit the cup out of my hand.
The liquid smoke as it flows across the snow, melting it. Usually, I would just quit in this kind of situation but right now, I know what I'm up against. She's defeated and disturbed. I understand what she's going through. I pick the mug up again and just cautiously leave the rolled up blanket close to her, but not too close of course.
"At least use the blanket." I request as I run away before she do anything unpredictable. "I'll still be there in the cabin! Just head west!"
Back in the cabin, I start to settle down. I'm still worried but I'm sure I did everything I can. Only time will tell what happens next. It's dark now and I need to wake up early tomorrow so I decide to go to bed.
I manage to sleep quite peacefully that night but only until midnight because some loud noises wake me up. I struggle to open my eyes and look out of the window... Oh my god! There's a strong blizzard outside. Wait, why am I worried? I should be safe right here in my home. I decide to just get back to sleep but for some reason, I feel like I am forgetting something important. Then, it dawn on me.
"Oh, crap." I exclaim verbally. "She's still out there, isn't she?"
