Chapter 3: Search and Rescue

Y/N's POV

In a rush, I get out of bed to grab my coat. I hastily put on my boots and start trekking toward the lake.

"I can't believe I'm doing this." I exclaim while shielding my eyes from the falling snow. "This weather is terrible"

Not only is it terrible, it's also disorienting. I seem to be going in circles a few times before actually getting to the lake. I look around for the girl but couldn't seem to find her anywhere.

"Hey, are you there?" I shout.

Maybe, she had gone away... or not. I notice something gleaming inside a snow heap . I trod through the thick snow clumsily and somehow manage to reach the said object. I wipe the snow away and as suspected, it is the heart-shaped gemstone. I dug the snow away with my hands and sure enough, there is the girl. She at least had wrapped herself up in the blanket but that really aren't going to help against this weather.

She is definitely unconscious. Is she even alive? I check her pulse and at least, it's still there. It's dangerously slow though so time is of the essence. I swiftly lift her body up and make my way back toward the cabin. Thankfully, she is as light as she looked. Even though the way back is definitely harder than the first trip, it is still doable. Through gritted teeth, I open the cabin door and haul her inside.

My job is still far from over though. She's still in bad condition. Can gems even get hypothermia? If they can, she probably has it now. Her skin seem like it had gotten paler. I lift her onto the couch next to the fireplace before taking away the wet blanket. I take my blanket from the bed and wrap it around her.

I touch her cheeks and forehead. It's ice cold and that's not good. Her breathing seems so irregular; it look like it could stop at any time. Come on, heat faster. After several painfully long minutes of worrying, she seem to have gotten better. Her body heat is returning and her breathing is returning to a normal rate alongside her pulses. I think it might be okay to leave her like this but just to make sure, I sit down on the opposite couch to observe her for a while.

It turns out "for a while" actually mean the whole night because I somehow fell asleep on the couch. I woke up with an annoying backache due to my weird sleeping posture. I look at the clock. 6.00 a.m. Crap, I would never make it for my job. Even if I could make it, I don't think I could just leave this girl here by herself.

"Please, no..." My lament is interrupted by the girl's soft voice.

It looks like she is having a nightmare. Her face is contorted into a painfully sad expression. What should I do? Should I try to wake her up? Could she even wake up? Whatever, I decide to follow my impulse and just hold her hand in mine. Unexpectedly, she surprises me by actually holding back tightly. It feels pretty awkward. After a while, her face softens into a more peaceful expression. I gently remove her hand and take my phone.

I should probably call my boss now about not being able to get to work. I'm not really on a good term with him so I don't really like doing this type of things but today will have to be an exception. I dial the number and hold the phone to my ear.

"Hey, boss." I start after the line connected "I think I'll have to call in sick today."

"What?" He blasts. "How did you just suddenly get sick?"

"The weather last night had been a little bit rough. I think the cold are affecting me."

"Tsk, fine. I'll let you off today but remember that you're dispensable. One more issue and I wouldn't think twice to fire you."

"Yeah, yeah. I know." I cut the line, talking with him is getting on my nerves.

It's time to make some breakfast. I look at the girl, still sleeping on the couch. Does gem needs to eat too? I guess I'll just prepare food for her too. I cook up some eggs and make a pair of sandwiches. I was just about to brew some hot chocolate before I am suddenly pushed against the wall by two pink outstretched hands.

"Why am I here?" The girl questions with a growl in her voice, looking at me with a face filled with anger.
