Your New Best Friend
Chapter 7: Better Together
(Y/N)'s POV
I wake up the next morning feeling refreshed and cured of my cold. I made my bed before heading toward the kitchen. I make a sandwich for myself and brew two mug of hot chocolate for both Spinel and me. I walk to the couch where spinel is sleeping and gently shake her awake.
"Huh, what's happening?" She asks drowsily while sitting up.
"Good morning!" I shout in her ear. "I made you some hot chocolate. Hurry up and drink it."
"Ow, no need to shout." She complains as she follows me to the kitchen.
Well, that's done. Now, there is still the elephant in the room that need to be taken care of. I need to go to work today and I don't think Spinel is going to be happy about staying alone. How should I approach Spinel about this? I need to make up my mind quickly because it's almost time for work.
"Um, Spinel." I start cautiously. "I need to go to work today."
"And?" She asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, you could stay home alone, right?"
"What are you saying?" She replies dejectedly. "Didn't we already talk about this? Does all of that actually means nothing?"
Her eyes are starting to get teary. Well, this isn't working well at all. What should I do? There's no way I could leave Spinel alone.
"I've got an idea." I exclaim. "How about this? You could just come along with me to work. I work by myself so it should be fine. It'll probably do you good too. It's probably boring to just stay here all day."
"Oh, that sounds great!" She cheers excitedly, her eyes lighting up. "Let's do that!"
Well, I just need to get my orders in order first. Then, we could go deliver them to their destinations. I take my bag and walk to the door with Spinel following right behind me.
"Oh, Spinel." I say to her. "I'll need to get my orders first so you just wait here for a while, okay?"
"What?" She asks in confusion. "This isn't what we agree on."
"No, no. We're still going together. I just need to get my orders first. It won't even take that long, I promise. Just trust me, okay?"
Spinel stared at my eyes for an uncomfortably long amount of time before finally giving in and slowly nodding.
"I'll be right back. Just stay still" I remind her as I start to leave for the post office.

Spinel's POV
I watch without blinking as (Y/N) gets smaller and smaller in the distance. This scene feels horrifyingly similar to an event from the past. Suddenly, it isn't (Y/N)'s back anymore I am seeing. It's now the back of Pink Diamond, leaving me. She's about to drift away, leaving me by myself. One moment she's there and the next, she's gone... forever. I snap back to reality with a burning determination.
"There's no way I'm going to do the same mistake again." I say out loud as I slam the door shut behind me and start running after (Y/N).

(Y/N)'s POV
"Almost there." I tell myself as I trudge on toward the post office.
I should be able to see it soon but suddenly, something pounces on me from behind and I lands face first into the snow with the thing still on my back. It's a wolf, isn't it? Damn it, is this how I'm going to die? I'm sorry, Spinel. It looks like I can't keep my promise after all. While I am lamenting about all the regrets I have in my life, the wolf... stands up?
"Oh, I'm so sorry." A familiar voice apologizes. "Are you okay?"
I turn around on my back to see Spinel standing over me. It turns out I was freaking out for no reason at all.
"Besides having my face punched by the snow?" I reply. "Yeah, I'm okay."
Spinel lets out a small giggle and hold her hand out for me. I take it and stand up.
"Can't wait that long, huh?" I ask her while ruffling her hair "We'll just have to go together then."
I guess it'll be fine. To be honest, i am actually worried that Spinel might be uncomfortable in a place with a lot of people like the post office. Heck, even I feel uncomfortable there. We reach it and it looks like my worry did prove to be true. Spinel keeps hiding behind my back and is actively avoiding other people. We get some weird looks from the people there including my colleagues but there isn't really anyone close enough with me to actually strike a conversation.
After taking my order, we leave the post office and head over to our first destination. It's a house not too far away from here. It's just a 5 minute walk and the house come into our vision soon enough.
"Hey, (Y/N)." Spinel says to me with a grin on her face. "Wanna race to the house?"
I'm shocked by her suggestion. I've never race with anyone much less while trying to deliver letters. I'm at a loss for words but I don't really need those words anyway.
"Ready, set, go!" Spinel shouts as she run toward the house.
"Hey!" I yell as I chase after her. "That's cheating."
That's how I stop doing my work alone and start getting closer with Spinel.
...
It had been almost a week since Spinel started following me to work. She seems to be getting better with being around strangers. She doesn't look as uncomfortable as before. As for me, I feel great. Spinel is such a good company to have. I never realize how boring my job actually is until I see how much fun I could be having.
Today is the same. Spinel is doing cartwheels beside me as we head home for the day. Today's deliveries are less than usual so it'll still be some time before the sun sets.
"I have an idea." I exclaim as I remember what Spinel had always been looking at every time we take the road back home. "Spinel, do you want to go to the park?"
"The park!" Spinel gasps. "Sure, it would be so much fun!"
Then, we do stop at the park. Spinel runs toward it as I follow slowly from behind. I feel pretty tired so I decide to rest on one of the benches there. My rest didn't last very long as a snowball hit me right in the face.
"Haha!" Spinel laughs at me. "Got you!"
"Spinel!" I howl as I stand up and make my own snowball to throw at her.
"Try to hit me if you can." Spinel jests as she run away.
"Oh, you'll regret that." I say as I run after her and lob the snowball at her.
Our snowball war last for a while before both of us got tired. We sit side by side on a pair of swings near the side of the park. I look at Spinel to find her looking down and fiddling with her thumbs.
"Hey, what's the matter?" I ask her, worried.
"Um, (Y/N)?" She replies hesitantly "Can I tell you something?"
