Chapter 8: Opening Up

It's backstory time! That means this chapter is a little boring. Sorry about that. In my defense, I guess It's important for the lore or something.

(Y/N)'s POV

"Do you know the diamonds?" Spinel asks me.

"The Great Diamond Authority who tried to colonize earth into a gems factory." I reply. "Yeah, I've heard of them."

"Okay, I don't want to talk about all of them. The only one that matters is Pink Diamond. Before getting her own colony, she was always bored, not having any friends to play with. That's where I came in. I was her playmate and we became great friends. We would play together every day. It felt like we would be having fun forever."

Spinel stayed silent for a while before continuing.

"One day, she received her own colony on this planet named Earth. I thought we would be together there as always but it seemed that I was clapping with one hand. Pink Diamond tricked me into playing a game, a game that involves me staying in the garden, a game where I'll always be the loser. That's when she..." Spinel's eyes start to water as she tries to hold back her tear. "...left and never came back."

"If you don't feel comfortable, you don't need to tell me everything now." I remind her as I wipe the tears off her face.

"It's fine, I need to do this." She replies as she gently pushes my hand away. "After 6000 years, I found out she was gone. Apparently she was living on earth with a group called the Crystal Gems and she had a son named Steven Universe. You must know them, right?"

"I've heard a few stories about them." I reply. "Never really see them personally though."

"Well, I decided to take revenge on them for what Pink Diamond did to me. I almost succeeded but then, Steven Universe and the Crystal Gems managed to convince me to change for the better. Long story short, the problem was solved. The next thing I knew the diamonds came to Earth and decided to adopt me. It was finally over. I was loved again and was able to love again."

"Well, that sounds like a good ending." I tell her.

"Heh, it's a good ending alright." Spinel says with a broken smile. "An ending too good to be true. They never see me as a friend but merely as a court jester to amuse them. They never see me as Spinel but merely as Pink Diamond's playmate. The only reason they keep me is only because they see me as some kind of memento to remind themselves of their lost sister. To be honest, usually I would be just fine as an entertainer but I'm not like how I used to be. I'm not good enough for them and it didn't take me long to see that. They ignore me as if I never exist. I couldn't stand living like that anymore so I decided to run away. Since I'm not good enough for anyone, I should just stay alone."

"Hey, don't be so hard on yourself." I tell Spinel who is starting to cry again. "Didn't you meet me after that? I don't care what other people think about you. You'll always be good enough to be my friend."

"Is that really how it is?" Spinel wipes her tears away and looks at me. "You're my only friend so I guess that makes you my best friend, right?"

"Yeah, that's how it is. I'm your best friend and you're mine."

"Thanks..." Spinel says with a little smile. "...for everything. For listening to my rambling and for trying to cheer me up.

"Hey, what are friends for?" I remind her. "It's getting dark. Let's go home.., best friend."

I stood up before holding my hand out for her. She takes it and stands up. On the way back home, I ponder about Spinel's past. I definitely sympathize with her. She didn't deserve anything that had happened to her. She needs a happily ever after, a real one this time and I've got just the idea to make that a reality.It's a crazy idea and I don't know if it will work but it's worth trying.
