Your New Best Friend
Chapter 11: Farewell
#Author's note#
There's a single word in this chapter that I want to strike through but I can't seem to do it in Wattpad so here's how I'm going to be writing the –w-o-r-d-. just imagine it's a strike through. Sorry about that
#End of note#
(Y/N)'s POV
It had been two weeks since Spinel and I came to live with the gems. Everything is going great. Spinel is spending more and more time with the Crystal Gems. She who used to be so dependent on me is now doing well on her own. We aren't as close as we used to be but it's fine. It's just what I expected to happen.
I myself haven't been too close with the Crystal Gems. I am not really the social type and they are also focused on Spinel so I'm just like a background character here. It's kind of boring because I just spend most of my time by myself but it's fine because just watching Spinel being happy is enough for me.
I have been postponing this for a while, trying to ignore it but I can't run away from reality forever. Spinel is now happy with the Crystal Gems which means now is the time to go home. At first, I was planning to tell Spinel that I would be leaving but on second thought, I don't think that's going to lead to any good outcome. I'm not going to burst her bubble now that she's being so happy. I decide that I should tell Steven instead that I'm leaving.
"Hey, Steven." I greet him. "I'll probably be leaving tomorrow morning."
"Really?" Steven responds. "What about Spinel?"
"She could just live here with you guys, right? She seems happier here and I didn't think you would mind."
"I guess you're right. The house does seem more cheerful with her around anyway."
...
After a night of barely sleeping, I wake up before dawn to start moving. I check my belongings one last time to make sure nothing is left behind. To be honest, this is probably the tenth time I check. I don't think I left anything behind. Well, except for...
I walk toward Spinel's room and slowly open the door, careful not to wake her up. There she is, sleeping peacefully. Her mouth forming the beautiful smile you're way too familiar with. You put the letter you had written last night on her bedside table. Hopefully, she'll see it. I look at her one last time and reach out to touch her face but I pull my hand back in. I shouldn't be interfering with her life anymore. She's happy now.
I step out into the road, dragging my luggage along with me. The bag which seems so light when we came here, now feels like it's filled with stone bricks. After waiting for a while, I manage to get a cab. It's hard to get a cab this early in the morning. Actually, I was secretly hoping there wouldn't be any but here it is and now, I'm on my way back home.

Spinel's POV
I stretch my hands as I wake up on another beautiful day. Every day seems to be beautiful here, knowing that my friends will always be here for me. It's time to start the day. I look at my scarves hanging at the wall and reach out to grab the new one but then, I hesitate. I just stood there with my hands outstretched for a while before decidedly grabbing the old scarf. The new scarf is good and all but it just doesn't seem right. I guess this scarf just have something special about it.
I head out of my rooms and greet each of the gems as I meet them. That's when I notice something is wrong. Something feels off here. It feels like something... No, someone is missing; someone who I should have noticed earlier.
"Steven?" I ask him who is sitting closest to me. "Where's (Y/N)?"
"(Y/N)?" Steven replies. "they had gone back to their home. Didn't they tell you?"
"No, they didn't!" Why would they leave just like that?
"I think they left a letter in your room." Garnet interjects from behind me.
I didn't even bother to reply before heading straight to my room. I look around furiously before finding it sitting there on my bedside table. How did I not realize it's there? With shaky hands, I clumsily unfold the paper.
---
Dear Spinel,
I'm sorry for leaving so surprisingly without telling you anything. I just couldn't face to tell you myself. I don't want to upset you now that you're so happy. I know I shouldn't have done that but there's still something important I need to tell you. Thank you. Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for keeping me company. Thank you for brightening my day with your cheerfulness. Thank you for everything you had done for me. I had talk with Steven and he said you could stay there forever with the Crystal Gems. Finally, you would have the happily ever after you deserve. Farewell, Spinel.
Your -b-e-s-t- friend,

"What were you thinking, you idiot?" I say under my breath in disbelief as I hold the letter to my chest. "I should be thanking you. This would never be a happily ever after, not without you."
I rush out of the door in a hurry and start heading towards the front door.
"Hey, what's the rush?" Amethyst asks as I hurry past her.
"I'm going out." I reply as I open the door.
"Going out? Where're you going?"
"Home." I said as I walked out before closing the door behind me and hailing a passing cab.

(Y/N)'s POV
The cab dropped me off a short walk away from my home. The road ahead is too rough for a cab to go through. I paid the cab driver before starting my walk toward home. With every step, my feet seem to be getting heavier. Everything in my body telling me to turn back but still, I push on. It feels so weird to be walking alone along this path that I had always walked with Spinel.
An even weirder feeling hit me as I walk past the park. I remember the time when Spinel and I threw snowballs at each other here. It's such a happy memory yet I still feel something warm flowing down my cheeks.
"You aren't supposed to come out." I say to my tears as I wipe it away. "I should be happy"
Not long after, I finally reach my home. I open the door and half expect Spinel to be sitting there on the couch next to a burning fireplace. Of course she isn't there and the fireplace isn't even lit. I try walking around the house normally but everything keeps on reminding me of Spinel; the computer, the kitchen and even the dark fireplace.
I'm starting to feel weird so I decide to rest in my bedroom. I sit down on the bed and that's when the thoughts start coming. A thousand different thoughts and none of them are good. It had been a long time since I felt like this. It's probably Spinel who-
"Hey, don't worry." The voice from the drawer interrupts my reverie. "I'm here, your best friend. Let's just do the usual."
I look at it in hesitation for a while before reaching out toward the handle.
