Chapter 5: A Short Trip

(Y/N)'s POV

I turn around to face Spinel who is standing in the doorway. Her face look somewhat shocked for some reason. It's not like leaving the house would be the last thing I would do.

"Yeah." I reply. "What's the matter?"

She averts her gaze toward the floor and stays silent for a few moments as if in thought.

"It's... nothing." She answers half-heartedly.

It definitely isn't nothing. She is definitely hiding her true feelings. Did she want to go to the market too? Why would she want to do that?

"You want to get something at the market?" I ask. "You can come along if you want."

"No, it's fine." She replies. "It's fine if you don't want me with you."

She sounded like I'm going to leave her here forever. How did she expect me to believe what she is saying?

"God damn it, Spinel." I sigh. "Come on. Close the door behind you and let's get going."

She reluctantly does as she was told but still, I think I saw her expression change. Maybe just a little bit happier. Whatever, I think I did the right thing. We start our 10 minute walk to the market. I walk in the front with Spinel following from behind.

"Um, aren't you cold?" I ask her skittishly. I feel kind of guilty for telling her to come out just like that.

"Nah, gems are pretty resistant to cold." She answers briskly. "That night was an exception of course. We still have our limits."

Halfway there, we pass by a playground. Snow covers most of the equipment such as a slide, a seesaw and several swings here and there. There are some children there, playing together in their winter clothing. They are currently throwing snowballs at each other and laughing cheerfully. I realize my distance from spinel is increasing. I turn around to see that she had stopped in her track. She is looking at the playing children with a wistful look in her eyes.

"Come on, Spinel." I snap her out of her reverie. "We're almost there."

We resume our trip and soon reach our destination. The market is bustling with people. The stallholders are shouting at the top of their lungs to advertise their product. All the people moving around like the current, each with their own objective in mind. This definitely is no supermarket but the stuff here is cheaper and I am already accustomed to this situation.

I take a look at my grocery list I had written the night before. So, I should need to buy some eggs and some vegetables, nothing too hard.

"So, what're we looking for?" Spinel asks curiously.

"Let's find some eggs first." I answer.

"I see some over there." She points her weirdly stretched hand toward a stall in front of us.

We weave our way through the crowd and sure enough, the stall is selling eggs. While Spinel is busy inspecting the eggs for some reason, I buy a few from the seller. The next one would be the vegetables, probably not too hard to find. Apparently, it is way harder to find than I expected and after a couple minutes of focused searching, I finally see one from the corner of my eyes.

"There it is!" I exclaim. "Come on, Spinel! Let's go. Spinel..?"

I turn around and to my surprise, she isn't there nor is she anywhere around me either. I must have lost her. Is that bad? I think that might be very bad.

Spinel's POV

While (Y/N) is buying the eggs, I occupy myself by inspecting a certain egg displayed on the stall. I think I saw it shake a little bit just now and from my observation, I think a baby chick is going to come out anytime soon. Can chicks even hatch from these eggs?

"Hey, (Y/N). Take a look at this egg." I say as I turn around toward them or where they should have been. "(Y/N)?"

Oh no, it's happening again. Where are they? Did they leave me? Did they abandon me? Is all of this actually a plan to get rid of me? Am I going to be alone again?

"No, Spinel!" I try to tell myself. "Calm down. You're always like this. This is the cause of all your problems."

Ugh, all the noises. It's so unfamiliar and threatening. It's making me feel uncomfortable. How could someone feel so alone in a place with so many people? I need to get out of here. I stumble clumsily until I manage to get to the edge of the market. There are several trees there and I sit under one of them. I raise my knees toward my eyes and curl myself into a ball.

"Don't cry!" I tell myself one last time. "You've been through worse than this. Don't you dare cry now."

(Y/N)'s POV

After buying the vegetables, I go on a search for Spinel all around the market. I visit the eggs stall from before and ask the seller there. She points toward a certain direction that Spinel have gone toward. I thanked her before following her direction. Along the way, I ask several other people if they had seen a pink gem anywhere but most of them aren't very helpful. Just as I reach the edge of the market and I am just about ready to give up, I saw her.

She is just sitting there under a tree, curled into a ball. It kind of reminds me of the first time we met at the lake. I run toward her.

"Spinel?" I said as I touch her shoulder gently.

She turns her head up to look at me. Seeing her face surprises me. I'm sure she had been crying a lot. Tears are still streaming down her cheeks under her glistening magenta eyes.

"You came back." She weeps dejectedly. "You didn't leave me."

"What're you talking about? Of course I didn't leave you." I ensure her as I wipe her tears off. "Come on. Let's go home."

I hold my hand out for her to take. She looks at it for a while, wipes her tears and takes it. I lift her up and she meekly gives me a punch in the stomach.

"Don't you dare do that again." She warns me.

The walk back home is kinda awkward. Spinel keeps holding on to my hand and I don't think I should be letting go first. Still, there's something oddly comfortable about it.

"Hey, (Y/N)" She whispers. "Thank you... for not leaving me back there."

"Of course." I reply, surprised by her unexpected gratitude. "I'm sorry too for not realizing we were separated in the first place."

"It's fine. I don't blame you."
