I suppose this could go along with the previous entry, but I'm thinking more of the pen and paper method.
One way I do this is to list the chapters on the paper, such as:
Chapter 1: This happens
Chapter 2: Now this
Chapter 3: And thisGet the idea? This is a great way to structure your thoughts together, and get a better idea of where you stand with your current written work.
I know when I wrote my third novel, I actually outlined a total of 12 chapters this way, at once. It did wonders in terms of inspiration building, and thought processing.
As far as brainstorming goes, it never hurts to make a page that goes something like this:
What's happened?
.
.
.
.What needs to happen?
.
.
.
.Basically to show what you still have left to write about, and you can get some ideas from there.
