My Lie

Two days had passed since I left the cabin. The landscape was slowly changing to a more familiar terrain that brought back memories. I had cut a lot of the traveling time by riding the horse. Every day, when the sun would go behind the horizon, I would set up camp. Once the sun would peek over the mountains in the morning, I would pack up and continue to follow the map to my hometown.

Today was a rather sunny day, with only a few clouds in the sky. I assumed that I would arrive at the end of the day today. I was excited, yet anxious to get back. There was no telling whether Timlin made it back home or not.

I finally exited the thick forest, and was now on the plains that the arena-masters rode on. I looked as far as I could see in each direction, looking in the direction of the arena last. When I looked in the direction of the arena, something unsettled me.

Obviously I'm going to be unsettled if I almost got killed in the arena...

I look away, but not before a slight movement on the horizon catches my eye. I look back, squinting my eyes to see if there was actually anything over there. Sure enough, I could barely make out movement on the horizon. I waited a few minutes to see if I could make out what it was.

Horses... With armed riders... Could it be... The captain of the arena-masters and his warriors?!

As soon as I thought about the possibility, I sprinted the horse towards the village. My heart was racing, my head was hurting, and it was getting harder and harder to breath as I realized that I could be dead within a matter of minutes!!

This was not just a few arena-masters looking to capture a few children. This was an army. An army made to wipe out a village.

Why do they want to wipe out this village?! They did nothing wrong!!

I heard shouts behind me. I had been spotted. After about five minutes of riding, the village finally came into view. My horse saw it too, and was motivated to sprint as hard as she could to the village.

When I finally reached the village, I looked behind me only to see that the arena-masters had gained on me. I jumped off the horse, and ran to the houses, yelling for everyone to barricade their houses. The villagers faces were pale, which isn't surprising, as I was supposed to be killed in the arena.

"There's an army coming!! Barricade the doors, and cover the windows!!" I shouted again.

This time, they rushed off to do as I said. I ran to my house and rushed through the door. I saw Mavricks peacefully sleeping on fathers lap.

"Mavricks!!" I yelled and rushed to hug him, tears threatening to spill.

He had grown to be so big!! And father had gotten so old! Mavericks sleepily opened his eyes, and studied me carefully.

"A-alexandra...?" He mumbled.

A year slipped down my cheek and I smiled, before remembering the situation.

"Mavericks, where is Timlin?"

He looked over to the end of the room and I followed his gaze, my eyes landing on a small curled up figure.

"T-timlin?!" I yelled, rushing over to him and shaking his small body.

He stirs slightly, and his eyes flutter open. As soon as his eyes land on me, he sits up quickly, wraps his arms around my neck, as clings to me as if his life depends on it.

"A-alexandra!" He cries.

"Shh... shh... It's okay... I'm here. We need to barricade the doors now though, okay? We have some trouble coming, and I need you to help me, okay?" I explain quietly.
