Quinlans p.o.v.
I woke up and found myself laying on the ground with Alexandra curled up next to me. She had her head leaning on my shoulder and one hand on my chest. She looked so sweet when she was asleep! I reminded myself that I wasn't aloud to be her boyfriend. 'Why not?' I thought to myself. 'Because the king of Attemeer gave me special orders to bring her back without anything that could distract her.' I thought angrily. 'Why was I chosen to go on this mission? Why me?' I thought. I couldn't help but brush a wisp of hair off her face. She had no idea how hard this was for me. She had no idea how hard it was to be with her all this time and not tell her about my mission. She had no idea how hard it was for me to be with her all this time and not tell her that I love her.
Alexandra's p.o.v.
I woke up to find Quinlan laying on the ground with my hand on his chest. Quinlan was laying on his back with his arm under my head. He was staring at the ceiling, no doubt in deep thought. His brow was creased and that gave me the impression that he was angry. I lifted my hand off his chest and started to sit up, but stopped when he grabbed my hand with his broken arm, forcing me to stop if I didn't want to hurt him. "What is it?" I asked in a concerned tone. "Are you okay?" He asked. "What do you mean 'am I okay'?" I asked, then added "Why wouldn't I be okay?" He sighed in relief. "Sorry, it's just that you came over here last night and I was just making sure you were okay." He said and I blushed. "Oh, yeah. About that-" I started to say but he cut me off. "That's okay. It was nice." He said and we both blushed and giggled. Just then, a guard came in and instructed us to follow him. We both became serious again and obeyed. I could tell that Quinlan was tense and I assumed that he was hoping the guards hadn't noticed that he had taken the food. He relaxed when he saw the room that we all started in. We got into our places, which were the same as before, and I motioned for Bentley to follow Quinlan. He looked hesitant but nodded in agreement. I also saw about ten other people, including Kendrick, motioning to each other. There were about ten people missing and I knew that those people had been killed on the first day. 'Don't think about it.' I told myself, but my brain was determined to make me weak. 'Madeline!' My mind called. I shook my head and concentrated on telling Cassandra to follow me. There were about ninety people this time.
The gates screeched and I started running in Quinlans direction. I spotted Bentley and Quinlan running towards the middle of the arena. I looked back to see Cassandra just passing the gates up. She was going way to slow. I hesitated, then ran back towards Cassandra, trying to avoid any people. When I got back, I picked Cassandra up and put her over my shoulder. Even when I was running like this I was faster than her. I looked towards the middle of the arena and saw Quinlan and Bentley, back to back, fighting a group of three people. I looked around to make sure that no one was focusing on us and set Cassandra down. Then, I took one of my daggers out of my belt and aimed it at one of the two people that were fighting Quinlan. Whoot. Thud. Followed by a shrill scream. Whoot. Thud. Another scream. Whoot. Thud. One last scream before I picked Cassandra up and carried her over to Bentley. He seemed like nothing happened but when I looked at Quinlan, his jaw was on the floor. "You're 'alright'?" He asked after regaining his composure slightly. "Why didn't you tell me that you were that good?" He asked, with the slightest bit of anger in his voice. I lifted my chin and was determined to stand my ground. "Did I hit each one in the heart?" I asked. "No" Came the reply. "In other words, did the dagger hit in the same spot each time?" I asked again. "No" "Did the dagger spin the same speed each time?" "Okay! I get where you're going but-" I held up my finger, silencing him. "Did the dagger hit with the same impact each time?" He glowered and me. Then came the long drawn out reply, "No" I unsheathed one of my daggers and aimed right past Quinlan's head. "What are you doing?!" He cried as he reached for my arm, but I had already thrown the dagger. "Aayeee" Someone screamed behind Quinlan. He turned around to find a dagger sticking out of a young boy's heart. He turned around slowly to find me trying to fight back giggles. "You didn't... actually... think..." I said in between giggles then burst out laughing. He scowled and strode off behind me. Bentley and Cassandra followed and I should probably too. I gathered my daggers, stood up straight and followed the others over to the far side of the arena. Most people are in a fight so it's not much of a problem to get there. We get there just as the gates open and we start heading back.
We start heading back to our cells until one of the guards stopped me and told me to follow him. I was going to feast. "Happy eating!" Quinlan said and hugged me. I followed the guard and soon we entered a royal room with chandeliers and diamonds, ruby's and emeralds. There were sapphires and amethysts, silver and gold. Everywhere I looked there were portraits. The table was a long rectangle table made of maple wood. There was a padded velvet chair for me at the foot of the table, and a bigger, more royal one at the head of the table for someone else. A man walked in. He looked like a king! But he looked way to young. He looked about eighteen. He stood in front of his chair and said "Sit please." In a very polite manner. He had dirty blonde hair that was about shoulder length and wavy. His eyes were hazel colored and he had long black eyelashes that gave him an innocent look. I sat. And when I did, maids started filing in and out of the room, bringing plates of turkey, bread, honey, pies, fruit, jam, potatoes, soups, salads, and best of all, a giant roast. I had never seen so much food in my life! I noticed the man looking at me pleased and regained my composure. He was planning something, I could feel it in my bones. I decided to get it over with. "What do you want from me?" I asked. "Nothing, but to dine with a skilled fighter and beautiful woman." He replied. "Okay, look. You might want to dine with me, but I don't want to dine with a king who kills children for his pleasure." I say and stand up. "Hey you, look. First of all, I'm not a king. I'm a prince." He says and starts slowly walking towards me. "Second of all, I didn't make that rule." He's almost to me and we haven't stopped looking into each others eyes. His eyes are very persuasive but I hold by own. "Third of all, I don't find any pleasure in watching innocent children die." He says quietly and reaches for my hands. 'Maybe he's right' I hear a little voice inside my head say. 'Maybe this isn't his fault' I quickly realize what he's doing to me and push him away. "Why don't you do something then?!" I yell at him. I walk back to the guard. "Take me out of here." I command. The guard just looks at the prince and stays put. "I said take me out!" I yell again. I look back at the prince then grab the guards sword. I point it at the guards neck and say again. "Take me out." The prince unsheathes his sword and slowly walks over to me. "You won't actually do it." The prince says. "I've seen your kind before. Go ahead. Try." I look at him and thrust the sword into the guards neck. I don't take my eyes off the prince as he looks at me then watches the guard fall to the ground. "Y-you..." He stutters and takes a step back. Then regains his composure and looks angrily at me. "You gave me permission" I say and try to hide a smile that is threatening to lift the corners of my mouth. He gets even angrier and charges at me. Our swords meet in a fury of thrusts and slashes. He swings his sword over his head and I block it and kick his stomach. He doubles over and tries to breath. I hit him a couple of times with the flat of the sword until he's backed up into a corner. "A skilled fighter." He says then smiles while still trying to get a breath of air. "And not only with weapons either." He adds and I get where he's going. "I'll make you a deal. I won't kill you if you give me your word that I can take a plate of food back to my cell with me." I say. "To your boyfriend?" "I don't have a boyfriend. I do, however, have a male friend. And yes, I would like to take a plate of food to my male friend." I say while still pointing my sword at his neck. "You have my word." He says after a long time of thinking. I lower my sword and he calls for his guards to escort me safely back to my cell.
"Quinlan!" I say and set the food down while running over to Quinlan and hugging him firmly. "What happened to you?" He ask's as he see's that I have been fighting. "The prince... he... what... I really don't know what happened Quinlan!" I say and he tries to calm me down. I calm down and tell him what happened from the beginning. When I finish, he looks guilty for some reason. "What is it?" I ask. "There's something I didn't tell you yesterday because I thought you'd be mad at me." He confesses. "What?" I ask. "When they took me to get fed yesterday, they sent a princess in to dine with me." "Go on" I say. "I wasn't as smart as you and kissed her in exchange for a plate of food." He says and looks down shamefully. I hug him as I realize that he didn't want to disappoint me. "You're not mad?" He ask's. "Not that you kissed her, but because you didn't tell me." I answer. He sigh's a sigh of relief. Just then, my stomach growls as if on que. "You didn't eat!" He exclaims. "Sorry, I was to busy fighting an evil prince." I reply then laugh. "You eat it." He says. "Quinlan. I got this for you." I say and push the plate of food into his hands. "I can't eat it Alexandra. Not when I can hear your stomach growl." He says as he pokes my stomach. I look at the food. "We'll share it." I say and he agrees. It was enough for both of our stomachs to be satisfied. We laid down to sleep and this time, before we went to sleep I asked him to hold me. Of course, he agreed happily and we both hugged each other, creating a warm embrace that made us both feel safe.
