Drew
I am finally back home. I cannot wait to see Haley again. I head inside, ready to surprise my girl.
"I'm home!" I call out.
My mother comes out of the kitchen, running towards me with her arms open wide. "You're back." She hugs me tightly.
"Drew!" Haley voice comes from the living room. She also comes running toward me.
Now I am pressed between my two favorite women.
Haley's father appears from the living room. He must have been spending time with Haley. What is he even doing here at this time of day? He is usually at work at this time.
"I'll be in the guest house if you need me," he says to no one in particular.
He leaves before the two women release me from the tightest hug I have ever received. They look at each other awkwardly. What is going on with them?
"What are you doing here?" my mother asks.
"I came for the weekend. I missed you both."
They exchange a weird look again.
"What was Richard doing here at this time? Didn't he go to work."
"He took the day off," Haley replies before my mother. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming?"
"I wanted to surprise you."
"You did." She smiles but it looks forced. Is she okay?
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, of course." She does not convince me.
Does she know about what happened last Sunday with that blonde? I do not think so. She would probably be screaming at me or hitting me for being such an idiot.
"Is something going on?"
"Can I talk to you in the kitchen?" my mother asks.
"Yeah, sure." I glance at Haley one last time before I follow my mother into the kitchen.
We sit at the dining table facing each other.
"What's going on?" I ask when she does not say anything.
"I don't know how to tell you this."
This is getting frustrating now. "Just tell me already."
"I have been seeing someone in the past few months and he asked me to marry him." She pauses. "I said yes."
"Why didn't you tell me you were seeing someone? You deserve to be happy. Who is this man anyway? When do I get to meet him?"
"You already know him."
What? "Please don't tell me you are getting back together with my fucking father."
"Language!" she scolds. "And no, it's not you father."
"Who is it then?" I am losing my patience now.
"Richard." Her voice is low but the name comes out clearly.
"What? You and Haley's father? Are you fucking serious?!" I stand up and slam both hands on the surface of the table. I cannot control my anger so I decide to leave the house before I do anything stupid.
This is crazy. They should not get married. What happens to Haley and I if they get married? She would be my stepsister. I do not like the sound of it. This marriage cannot take place.
"Drew!" Haley's voice comes from behind me.
I reach my car by the time she catches up with me.
"Did you know about this?" I ask her.
Her guilty expression gives me the answer. Of course she did. Why didn't she tell me last Saturday?
"How long did you know?"
"Ashley told me on Monday. She made me promise not to tell you because she wanted to be the one to tell you."
At least she did not know for more than a week. But she still should have told me. I do not care if she promised my mother not to tell me.
I open the car door but she stops me. "Where are you going?"
"I don't know."
"Can I come with you?"
"No." I climb into my car, start the engine and drive off.
I have no idea where I am going. I just drive.
