Drew
"You don't have to come home every weekend." Haley stuns me with her words.
"What? Why would you say that?" I stand up from my bed and walk to her. "You don't want me to come over anymore?
She shrugs. "I just don't want you to feel like you have to come over every weekend."
I take her face in my hands. "I just want to be with you."
There is something different in the way she looks at me. I cannot quite figure out what it is.
"Do you want to break up?" My words come out before I can stop them.
The shock in her eyes tells me I am wrong before she even verbalizes it. "No. Do you?"
I kiss her lips before answering her lame question. She does not even have to ask. "My answer to your question is a fucking big fat no."
Her fear turns to happiness but then something changes again.
"Is everything okay?" I am starting to get worried. She is acting strange today. What is going on with her?
"Yeah, everything's fine."
"Okay." I pretend to believe her but I know the wheels are turning in that pretty head of hers. I have to figure out what is going on.
I leave Haley alone in my room and go find my mother in the kitchen.
I take a seat at the dining table before I ask, "Do you know what's going on with Haley?"
She stops stirring the soup and turns to face me with a stunned expression. "Why do you ask?"
I shrug. "She seems different. Like she's worried about something."
"I don't see anything different about her." She continues stirring the soup.
"Maybe it's because you see her every day."
It is much easier to distinguish small changes in a person over longer periods of not seeing that person.
I need to talk to Haley again. Maybe I can coax the truth from her mind. I will speak to her after lunch.
During lunch, Haley still appear agitated. When I rub her knee under the table to calm her nerves, she goes completely still. She has been distant from me since I arrived this morning. Could it be that she is nervous about her final examinations? They will determine which college she goes to. They must be the reason she is acting so strange, right? I let go of her knee to give her space. What is weirder, is that my mother eats in silence. Does she know something I don't?
Once we finish our lunch, I follow Haley to my room. She sits on the edge of the bed and I sit next to her. I wrap my arm around her and pull her close to my side.
"Tell me what's going through your mind," I whisper to her. "Are you stressed about your finals?"
She nods slowly but does not say anything.
I know of a great method to reduce her stress level. It involves both our bodies and the bed. I start to pull up her shirt and kiss her temple.
"I can help with that," I whisper, my lips brushing her temple.
I move my lips down to meet hers and kiss her slowly. The kiss is different – she is hesitant.
"Relax," I tell her.
I can feel how tense she is as I remove her shirt and then her pants.
"Relax," I repeat.
I lay her down on the bed before I take off my own clothes in a rush. I hover on top of her and kiss my way down from her neck to her stomach.
Suddenly, she pushes me away and sits up facing me. "I cannot do this right now."
"What's wrong?" I ask with concern. "Are you on your period?"
She hesitates before she nods and looks down wrapping both her hands around her stomach.
"It never stopped us before," I tell her. "What's different now?"
She mumbles something I cannot comprehend.
"What's that?" I ask.
She mumbles a little more clearly and I think I hear her say, "I'm pregnant."
I do not know if my ears are deceiving me or if my mind is playing tricks on me. Could she really be pregnant?
