She stared at her computer screen with a weak smile. The curly haired boy on the other end of the video call looked at her with concern. It seemed dark outside, the window of his hotel room behind him. They were both in their own beds, laying on their stomachs as they stared at one another.
"I'm sorry," she said softly. "What time is it there?"
Underneath the charming smile he was sending her was obvious fatigue. There were small bags under his eyes, and he looked like he had just awoken.
"Don't worry about it," he smiled.
"Where are you?" she asked.
"New York."
That meant he was in the same time zone, and it was definitely late.
"I'm sorry Roman," she said, leaning against one of her own arms.
"Don't worry about it," he said again, grabbing the blanket to throw it over himself and get comfortable. "You're calling at night, and your eyes are poofy, I'm more worried about you now. What happened?"
"I'm a little useless these days," she said. "I'm sorry for calling. I know it beats the point of having space if I come running to you every time I don't like my life."
"You are anything but useless, Lilah Rae," he chuckled. "And seriously, stop apologizing. It's good to see your voice and hear your voice. Explain to me what's happening."
So she did, in between sniffles and proclamations that she wished he was home.
"Okay," Roman said, nodding as he took in all of the information. "Honey—Lilah. I know you want to protect everyone, I know you want to be able to help. But I think you should let this one go. Let Dr. Saltz and Hope and the rest of them take care of this, and I need you to pause and take care of yourself. You're trying to take responsibility for too many things, let them take care of it. I have hope in Dr. Saltz and your cousin that everything will be fine. Your friends will be fine. Rafael will be fine."
In her emotional state, she let it blow over her head that Roman separated Rafael from the rest of her friends, and she also didn't notice the small frown in his face when he said it himself.
"How about this," Roman said when he noticed Lilah still looked conflicted. "Tonight, you stay on the call with me. We just talk tonight, and you can stress out about everything, but in the comfort of your own room."
She smiled, setting the computer up so that she can lay down comfortably and stay on call with Roman.
"Thank you," she smiled at him. She grabbed the bear he gave her, letting him see it. He laughed as she made it wave at him, the way he did two years ago. "Bear and I we miss you."
