He stared
at me.
"I can see Hayes."
I told him.
"Are you shitting me, Lena?"
His
eyes
widened.
"No. I can see him. I can feel him. He's there."
"Where?"
He asked.
"In my house. He used to live there."
Without
preamble,
Conner
pulled back
onto the road
and was
on the way
to my house.
"You won't be able to see him, if that's what you're thinking."
He stared
straight
ahead
and stepped
on the gas.

When we got
to the destination,
it was evident
that my mother
was still
at the studio.
The house
was cold.
Conner studied
my expression
to make sure
I wasn't lying
to him.
"Hayes!"
I called.
He came down
the staircase.
He stared
at Conner.
"Why is he here?"
He asked.
"He didn't believe me."
I told him.
"Make him know that you're here."
"I can't."
Hayes said.
"He doesn't see me."
And he didn't.
Conner was
looking around
frantically,
trying to
find his
ex best friend.
He was also
trying to see
who I
was talking to.
He was blind.
"Conner, he's standing right here."
I pointed
in front of me.
"I don't see anything."
"He's right here. Hayes, please!"
"I can't do anything."
He said.
"Conner doesn't see me. He can't see me."
"Make him see you!"
"I can't!"
"I don't see anything!"
Conner said.
Hayes
walked
in front of
Conner
and touched
his shoulder.
Conner
couldn't feel
a thing.
He just
kept staring
right
in front of him.
I was crazy.
Conner
couldn't
see
him.
I couldn't help
but fall
to the floor
and cry.
"He's not here, Lena. I can't see him."
He sounded
angry.
"Leave!"
I told him,
"Get the hell out!"
And he did.
