"Whatever happened to Olive?"
I asked him.
"My sister fell in love."
He said.
"She was sixteen and he was eighteen." Hayes
looked down.
"What happened?"
I was
very absorbed
in the story.
"She told him everything,"
he shook
his head,
"she told him of the death of our mother, the beating that we endured, she told him everything. So they ran away."
"Why didn't you go with Olive?"
"Because the boy only wanted Olive. And Olive only wanted the boy. She said she'd come back for me when she was old enough to take me, but she never did."
"I'm sorry, Hayes."
"Don't you understand?"
He asked me.
He took
my hand
in his.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. Your sorrow has nothing to do with what happened. Your sorrow never saved me, Lena. Your sorrow will never save anyone."
He smiled
sadly at me.
"It is your love that saves. You saved me by that."
He kissed me
hard
on the mouth.
