I admired
the tradition
of holidays.
Like
no matter
what happens
through
the years,
there's
always
holidays.
Even
though
Lena's sister
died,
the day
still
went on.
The world
never
stopped.
I admired
that.No one
really
said much
during
the meal.
They would
just simply
comment
on how
good
Lydia's
cooking
was,
or occasionally
ask for
someone
to pass
the salt.
Emmaline
stayed at
Lena's heels
the whole day.
Lena
wouldn't let
Emmaline
out of
her sight.
No one
really noticed,
but Emmaline
barely ate
a thing.
She just
tossed
the potatoes
around
on her
plate
so no one
would
realize
that she
hadn't
eaten
any of it.
Lena
wasn't doing
much better.
She eyed me
from her
position
at the table.
I could tell
she was
mentally
screaming
at everyone.
I could
also tell
it was
torture
to those
girls
to hold in
that
secret.
