After
I dried
my tears,
Hayes
and I
walked
on the beach.
I sat there
in the sand
while
Hayes
threw rocks
into the ocean.
"What are you thinking about?"
I asked him.
"I don't know."
He hurled
another
rock
into the ocean.
"You seem to be thinking pretty hard."
I smiled.
"You better be careful, your brain might explode."
He turned
to me
and sat down.
"You know I used to throw rocks here all of the time when things got too tough to handle."
He stared
out at the sea.
"I'm so glad you're here with me, Lena."
He inched
closer to me.
I looked
out at the ocean,
seagulls
were dancing
in the twilight
of the offing.
When I turned
to look at him,
he was
already staring.
"Why do you seem to like me so much, Hayes?"
I whispered
to him.
"Because I do."
"Why?"
"Because you're everything I've ever wanted."
He smiled
his best
lopsided
smile
that made me
want to die.
He leaned
into me,
and God,
I was positive
he was
going
to
kiss
me.
He placed
his hand
on the
back
of my neck,
I closed my eyes,
he fit his face
with mine,
and just before
our lips
could conflate---
"Lena, honey, I'm home. Come inside, now."
Damn it,
mom.
He read me
to sleep
again
that
night.
