A few days went past without anything happening, but I was still on edge the whole time.
I was constantly looking over my shoulder, it was driving me insane. I couldn't just go to a park with Jacob or go shopping alone like a normal person. I felt trapped and I hated it. I've always been such an independent person. I also didn't want this stress and tension around Jacob in case he picked up on it.
Ben picked Jacob up from my mum's and met Adam and me at my work just as I left the office. I got into the back of Ben's car and sat next to Jacob at the back. Adam drove off and Ben followed closely behind to take us both home. As we drove past the shops and homes, my eyes were constantly scanning the streets for Josh.
This was my life now. Jacob and me being driven and escorted everywhere.
I got into the house and went straight to the kitchen so Jacob and I could have some dinner. I was surprised to see Tom sitting at the breakfast bar.
"Hey, you're home early." I passed Jacob to him and watched as Tom kissed him softly on the head then place him into his highchair.
"I've got to go on a business trip." Tom announced as I sat down next to them.
Helen poured me a glass of wine and made Jacob a bottle of juice, before starting to plate up dinner, which smelt heavenly.
"What? Now?"
"In the morning."
"Where? How long for?"
"Three days again but it's not far. It's only a few towns away so an hour or so but it just makes sense to stay there as I will have dinner meetings too."
"Oh."
"I won't go if you don't want me to. If you don't feel safe enough. I know it's really bad timing with Josh being out." Tom explained.
"I'm sure I will be fine. I have Adam and Ben, don't I?"
"Yes. I can always get an extra guy in too."
"No, its fine. I'm sure those two will be alright."
Helen placed a delicious looking spaghetti Bolognese in-front of us and a small bowl for Jacob, who was now eating great on his own.
"Are you sure you will be ok, baby?" Tom asked me.
"I'm sure I will, don't worry about us." I reassured him, smiling and picking my fork up to eat.
But deep down, I was dreading it. I couldn't sleep properly without him here.
That night, as Tom cuddled me in bed, I still had my fears, "Do you have to go?" I asked him quietly.
"I don't absolutely have to, but I should do. Just say the word and I will be staying here with you, not leaving your side."
"No, you have to go. I'm sure I will be ok."
"I'm only just over an hour away. If anything does happen, then I will drive back." He reassured me.
I nodded and snuggled into his neck, breathing in my favorite aftershave.
"I will always be here for you." He whispered to me, as my eyes closed.
The next two days went ok.
I went to work with Adam after we had dropped Jacob off at my Mum's. I made sure Ben was sitting in his car right outside her house, alert. I didn't leave my office at work at all. If I ever needed anything, I just had to call Adam and he would get it for me.
