First Meeting

Eliza first met Alexander on Thanksgiving Day.

She had just set the turkey on the table outside. Her family always had Thanksgiving outside. Yes it was disgusting, at least to her, but it was a tradition that her mother refused to break. Eliza swatted a fly away from the turkey and pulled her cloak over her shoulders. Though it was only November, it was still very cold, and they were expecting snow that night.

Her older sister, Angelica, walked out of the house. "Betsey, what are you doing out here?"

"I'm 'guarding the food' according to Mom," Eliza sighed. She tapped her foot impatiently and waited for the rest of the family to walk out of the house. Angelica stood beside her. They both half-glanced at the food every 5 seconds, tempted to take a piece.

"Why don't you go on a walk? You seem pretty antsy, and I know you love walking around town. I'll guard the food for you," Angelica offered, shooing her younger sister away.

Eliza eyed her suspiciously, reluctantly nodding her head and walking the opposite direction, "I'll only be a few minutes."

As soon as Eliza turned her back, Angelica stuffed a roll in her mouth.

Eliza took a deep breath in as she walked through the streets on that cold November evening. It really was lovely out, and she was getting a little impatient with the food.

Alexander, was speed-walking down the street. He was going to be late- Washington was expecting him. He grumbled when he noticed his shoe was untied, and got down on one knee to tie it again.

Eliza was about to walk past when she noticed something. In the man's red hair, almost blending in, was an orange leaf of similar color. The wind must have blown it in there. She tapped him on the shoulder.

"Sir?" She asked timidly. She had never been good at speaking to strangers. "Yes?" Alexander replied in an irritated voice. He knew that he should be more polite. But he was running late and this woman was not doing him any favors by stopping him.

"Uh, you have something in your hair...," She trailed off, avoiding eye contact. He brushed a hand over his hair. Nothing fell out. The leaf was knotted in. He brushed it again. Still nothing.

"Um, do you want me to get it out?" She asked with a bit more confidence. As angry as this stranger may be, the whole situation was, well, hilarious. She watched his face grow redder as he nodded, all the while swatting at his messy, red hair.

She reached over and swiftly pulled the leaf out. He thanked her quietly and was about to leave again before she stopped him again, and pulled all the bits of the leaf that were still stuck firmly in his hair. He thanked her once more.

She stopped him one last time. "What's your name?"

"Hamilton. Colonel Hamilton. And yours?" He asked, glancing up and down the road as if expecting to see Washington looking around for him. He wouldn't have asked, but he didn't want to seem rude to the lady who had saved him from later embarrassment.

"Elizabeth. Elizabeth Schuyler," She introduced herself. He gave her a tight smile and both began walking on their way before she felt a tap on her shoulder.

"By the way, you have a leaf in your hair, too."
