The Winter Soirée ~ Part one
School was choking up everyone in Avonlea high but despite all of the work piling up one after the other, the gang excitedly anticipated one thing throughout the whole school week: Josephine Barry's famous Winter Soirée. A couple days prior, Diana invited her closest friends Anne, Gilbert, Ruby and Cole to stay over at her aunt Jo's mansion the night before the party and the Sunday after. Josephine Barry had always been quite the mentoring figure to all of this kids' lives. Especially to Cole.
On the friday afternoon they were driving up to Charlottetown, Ruby and Diana were just happily chipping away at the front of Di's car, recording a video of them passionately lip syncing to a song, as typical teenagers do. Giddy laughter and snickers filled the car and out of the random, a wild Gilbert Blythe appeared through the sun-roof, almost scaring the living daylights of the girls with a weak roar.
As a defence reflex, Diana roughly shoved Gilbert's shoulder which caused him to fall right through the roof in a totally graceful manner. Ruby however, couldn't help but giggle and light shades of red and pink flushed all over her face. Everyone in Avonlea probably knew how much Ruby was completely head over heals for Gilbert and those who didn't see it were as blind as a mouse. Same went for Blythe... but for someone else.
"Oops," Diana said smugly. She always thought of Gilbert as an older brother figure and so did Gilbert. How couldn't they? They were in diapers together, inseparable in pre-school and and probably told each other almost everything that was on their vivid minds. They were each other's first kiss in kindergarten but it was in a game of 'Moms 'n' Dads' so it didn't count. Even though they do so many things together like photoshoots, shopping trips and sleepovers, they could never look at each other like anything more than a sibling figure.
"What are we doing, ladies?" Gilbert questioned as he struggled to pull himself up from the car floor.
"We were waiting for Anne and Cole but we were bored so... made a video?" Ruby shyly uttered out.
"I swear if you guys were making some tik tok dance video then I'll literally get out of this car and walk my ass to bloody Charlottetown." Gilbert sarcastically warned the girls. "By the way I've been meaning to ask, but are Anne and Cole together by any chance?" Gilbert's tone softened and his eyebrows knitted in curiosity and... hope?
"Hey friends!" an enthusiastic familiar voice yelled from close distance.
Before anyone was able to answer, a jolly Cole Mackenzie came walking toward them with his yellow personally customised duffel bag in hand and his back-pack lazily slung on his right shoulder. He was as happy as he could ever be!
Anne was tagging along a few steps behind Cole, with her backpack on her back but her duffel bag probably weighed five~hundred metric tonnes you could tell she was struggling to move with it weighing her down.
As Gilbert witnessed her little scuffle, he didn't hesitate once and swiftly got out of the car to give her a hand.
"I can handle this myself, Blythe." Anne puffed out but Gilbert didn't expect any other reaction.
"I know," he shot her a grin. He knew how strong Anne was and her strength was something he always admired about her. She defined what it meant to be a head-strong and independant woman but like everyone, under that tough shell she had a soft heart full of passion, stubbornness and emotional vulnerability. And he knew that.
But of course, that didn't prevent Gilbert to express his typical chivalrous deeds.
Anne soon propped her duffel bag in to the boot with everyone else's. Before she got in to her seat of the car, Gilbert just couldn't help but assist Anne on taking off her back-pack. Anne who didn't pay attention to this simply acknowledged him with a simple nod and then scooted over to her seat next to Cole. To her dismay, Gil sat right next to her too.
