"Dylan, I think your parents are lying to you about that water allergy." Sam says. I watch as the water runs down my arm, they're right, it was all a lie. What if what I thought happened at the beach was real?
I decide to tell Sam the truth, I tell them about the recurring dream and the mystery person and that night at the beach and what really happened when they left. They look a little dumbfounded, and at first, I think they won't believe me, but they say something I don't expect.
"I won't let anyone take you away." They say.
"What?" I ask, confusion obvious on my face.
"I used to have a friend, their name was moss, and they could turn into animals. One day some men in perfect matching suits came and took them away in a van, nobody remembers them for some reason, it's like they never existed. I won't let that happen to you too." They tell me, hugging me.
Now I'm scared, knowing this power could get me taken away or killed isn't very reassuring. I hug back.
"I won't go anywhere." I tell sam.
"And I won't tell anyone." They reply. I smile at them.
"Does this mean I can go swimming now?" I giggle, and Sam giggles a bit too before their look turns serious again.
"You might end up in another world!" They scoff, "Plus you'd have to tell everyone else about this and I don't think that's a good idea." They continue, I know what they mean.
"Yeah, come on, let's go to bed now." I say, getting tired. They nod and we go to bed.
I wake up in an empty room. I have to wonder if last night was all just a big dream. I open the window and see Sam sitting next to it on the roof, the sun glistening on the wet patches still there from last night. Sam smiles at me.
"Good afternoon sleepy head." They greet me.
"Was I really asleep that long?" I ask.
"Yep." They reply. I roll my eyes.
"Hey, why don't you go knock on my door, I can go answer it so it doesn't look suspicious and we can hang out somewhere else." I tell them, and they nod at me and begin to climb down the roof while I get ready and run down the stairs two at a time. I get to the door just as I hear the first knock.
"Hey, Sam, ready to go?" I smile, acting like I didn't spend last night with them.
"Yep." They say.
"Where are y'all going?" One of my moms asks, she always wants to know where I'm going.
"The mall." I tell her, walking out the door. As soon as it shuts I grab Sam's hand and we run, giggling like children all while. The ground is still wet from the rain the night before. Just as we're about to reach the parking lot to the mall I step into a puddle and it splashes around me and Sam gasps, as I fall through it.
