I run all the way to Luke's house, there are tears in my eyes. What the fuck is wrong with him? How could he do that to Sam?
I'm at his house, the door is locked. I go around to the side of the house where his room is and try to open the window, it's locked too. Just as I'm about to punch straight through it, it opens, and my arm clumsily falls in. Sam jumps out. I see Luke sit up and I grab Sam's hand. I lead the way as we run, not giving them time to look back. I run and run and run, we end up at the beach. I run with Sam and jump onto the giant rock, when we get to the top we jump. I hear Sam scream behind me, I don't let go of their hand.
When I open my eyes I'm in a world that's quiet, empty seeming. The cars on the street are all crashed except for one in the distance, I can see people moving around at a gas station a ways away. They don't seem to notice that I'm here.
"Where are we?" Sam asks. I look over at them, their clothes are torn and there's a blood stain on their sweater from the bloody nose that likely knocked them out. I hug them with tears in my eyes.
"I'm so sorry, I should have come and checked on you when I got the call." I say, they hug back.
"It's not your fault, you didn't know." They tell me.
I hear a voice behind us and turn around.
"You shouldn't be here, this is not your story." It's the girl again.
"What do you want from me? First, you want me to use my powers, then you want me to stop using them, what do you want?"
"I want you to find a better story, one that's safe, one where you belong." She says, then she steps back into a puddle and disappears.
I turn around again and see the bus that's by the gas station start moving again. I take Sam's hand and jump into the puddle in front of me, thinking about where I want to go this time, somewhere where they can be safe.
This time when I open my eyes I'm in a pile of hey, we must be in a barn, I can hear a tractor outside, I look to my other side and see a water trough a couple of feet away, probably for some horses or something.
"You'll be safe here." I say, Sam looks at me with sad eyes.
"You're not staying?" They ask.
"I promise I'll come back and we can find a more permanent place to be when I do, but for now you're going to stay here while I deal with some unfinished business at home." I tell them.
"Stay safe please." They tell me.
I nod back at them and jump down into the trough. I wake up on the beach.
