I wake up in the dark to the sound of a Skype call. It's been a few days since the incident at the beach and my friends keep calling to check up on me but never this late. I go over to my computer and go to answer the call, but I'm too slow. I decided to just message back instead.
ChillinDylan: Sam? Why did you call me? Why are you even up this late?
SamMiles: I have to get out of the house, I just need somewhere to stay for a few days, I'll explain later.
ChillinDylan: you know my parents don't let me have friends over very often or for very long and it's way too late, I'd get in tons of trouble
SamMiles: I know your parents are strict and all, but I have nobody else to turn to
SamMiles: I'd be found at Ashley's house, Troy is at his boyfriend's half the time and Luke's parents always act like we're going on a date or something
SamMiles: please, I'll be quiet, no one will even know I'm there
ChillinDylan: fine, climb up to the attic window, it'll be unlocked when you get here, you better tell me what's going on once you're here
SamMiles: I will, thank you
They log off and I go to unlock the window, a strike of lightning lights up the sky when I do, I didn't realize it was raining until now. It's pouring out, I hope Sam can get in okay. A few minutes later I see the window open, the sound of the rain hitting the floor fills my room before the window shuts again.
"Hey Sam, I'll go get some towels and a change of clothes for you. You can change in the bathroom and hang your wet stuff in the shower." I tell them, and they just nod their head, I can't see their face under the large hood they're wearing. I grab a sweater and some fuzzy polka dot pants, hoping it isn't too girly for them, and some towels. When they come out dry and changed they finally look at me. They have a large bruise on their chin and a black eye, their nose is bruised and bloody, and the makeup they were wearing to hide it is smeared on their face.
"Sam! What happened?!" I ask, grabbing the sides of their face, I grab a box of tissues and hand them to Sam.
"My dad, he got mad, we fought, that's why I had to leave the house." They tell me, putting some tissues in their nose to stop the bleeding.
I comfort Sam the best I can for a while and I agree to let them stay the night. Eventually, their nose stops bleeding.
"Hey, come on, let's get some sleep. You can have the bed." I suggest, Sam nods their head.
"Okay, but we can share the bed, plus I wanna use the bathroom first." They say. I blush a bit at the thought of sharing a bed and I walk out of the bathroom to let Sam do their business. I run back when I hear a yelp.
"Sam!?" I call, hoping they didn't fall and hit their head on something. They open the door and hold out their hands.
"The water, it, it hurts!" They say, looking confused. I look at their hands and then I look back up at them.
"It started as a tingling didn't it?" I ask, they nod, still confused. I run over to the window as another crash of thunder booms outside. Sam seems to get the same realization I had. I open the window and roll up my sleeve, I look back at Sam who just nods at me. Slowly, I reach my arm outside and feel the cool rain on my arm, it doesn't tingle or burn or anything like that. I slowly shut the window.
"Dylan, I think your parents are lying about that water allergy."
