My breathing fast, I see no one in front of Lisa’s hospital room from afar. Reaching the door is fast paced steps, I see Nathan, Liam, my parents and the one person I never though I’d see here, my brother Robert.

I step into my sister’s hospital room with much hesitation. Frowning towards Robert, my mother catches on straight away.

“Amelia….” My mother trails off.

“What’s going on? I thought something was wrong with Lisa?” I cut her off, bombarding them all with questions.

“Well it’s quite the opposite with Lisa, she’s shown a bit of improvement.” Nathan smiles and I return it, relief filling me.

“So why is he here?” I gesture to Robert who stands tall next to my father.

“He’s come here for support.” My mother answers for them all.

“Support? Is he going to start a fight here too?” I snarl, my voice laced with anger. My eyes divert to Robert who refuses to look me in the eye.

“Amelia, we are still family…”

“What family abuses each other?”

“Don’t cause a scene please.”

“Get rid of him and I won’t. Lisa won’t be thrilled about this.”

“Lisa would want us to be together as a family in this period of time. We need each other.” She continues.

“So it takes one of us to get into a coma for him to return?” I bite.

“Amelia-“

“Mum…“ I mock. I know for sure that my behavior and attitude right now is not right but I can’t bear the Robert being here. It’s been a year since he walked out on my family and truth be told, it was the best thing that happened for me, for my family too. My stress level was nowhere near as bad as it had been in the last six years at that time. I always thought it was school that stressed me out, not for one second did I take a look at what Robert was doing to cause me such pressure.

“Please…. for Lisa.” She begs. I see Nathan look at me cautiously from the corner of my eye, my father too. As for Robert he almost looks to begging for my acceptance but I have forgiven him way too much in my life and Lisa’s condition isn’t going to make me forgive him again. Nothing could.

“I’m not going to pretend like I’m okay with him here, but for Lisa’s sake I will stay away.”

“That’s not what she would want.” Mum argues softly.

“He hurt her too, Mum. He hurt all of us. Don’t forget that.” I say before taking a quick glance at Nathan and walking out of the room.

As I rapidly walk down the corridors of this white hospital, I spot Nurse Lily at the reception desk. She calls me out just as I walk past.

“How are you going?” She asks with concern when I halt to a stop.

“Fine.” I answer, not looking her in the eye.

“Really?” She asks as she places her clipboard down on the desk.

“No.” I reply holding back my tears. Lily’s face falls and she places her hand on my shoulder.

“I know this isn’t about your sister….” She trails off. For someone I just met, she knows a lot.

“No it isn’t, I just need to leave here, can you give me a call when the newbie in Lisa’s room leaves.” I order as I pick her pen up and write my number on a blank space on the papers attached to her clipboard.
