“Kiri?”  Yuki poked her sister in the arm.  “Do you want to sing a song? Come on, let’s go play a game.  I never play with you anymore, and you shouldn’t play sleep no more.  It’s- it’s like you’ve gone away!”

Yuki pulled and tugged at her sister.  “We used to be best buddies, but now you’re too busy playing sleepy to play with me!  Do you want to play a game?” Yuki leaned forward and whispered into Kiri’s ear with a silly voice, “You can pick the game.”

When this failed to get her sister to come play, Yuki leaned back and crossed her arms.  “Okay, fine.  I’ll play by myself!”

Yuki marched off to a corner of the room.  “I’m so lonely,” She said loudly, “Because nobody wills play with me!”

No response.

That was odd.  Kiri always came when Yuki said something like that, if only to tell Yuki to be quiet if Kiri was in a bad mood.

Maybe something was wrong.

Yuki shrugged the thought off.  She just had to try harder, and then Kiri would play with her.

Yuki skipped back to Kiri.  She poked her sister again.  “Do you want to sing a song?  Or play chase around the room?  I think some games are overdue.  I’m so lonely, I might start talking to the walls!”

She paused to wave at the wall for good measure.  “Hi, Joe!”

Yuki turned back to Kiri.  But Kiri didn’t respond.

A frown came over Yuki’s face.  A memory came into her mind.

“When I was littler,” She said, “we had a doggie.  Then the doggie got sick, and went to sleep, and a grown up took the doggie away.  Momma told me that the doggie was in a forever sleep, and we had to keep the doggie in our hearts now.”

Yuki started to cry.  “Is that what happened to you, Kiri?  You in a forever sleep?  Do I have to keep you in my heart now too?”

She fell to her knees beside her sister.  “The thing is, Kiri,” She whispered into her sister’s ear.  “I don’t want you to be in a forever sleep.  I wants you to wake up right now.”

Yuki grabbed onto her sister’s hand.  It felt cold, as if they had been walking outside on a cold day.

“Please Kiri.”  Even though Yuki knew she was supposed to act like a big girl now, and that big girls didn’t cry, she couldn’t help it.  “Please don’t be in a forever sleep.  I don’t want to keep you in my heart.  I want you awake, outside my heart!” Yuki wailed.

She shrieked.  She yelled.  She cried and sobbed and screamed, but no amount of sound succeeded in waking her sister up.

Yuki calmed down a bit, so that the tears only streamed down her face and not out through her words.

“Kiri,” She whispered, “Do you want to sing a song?”
