I sat at the kitchen table with Kera on the opposite side of me. I could feel her eyes on me as I looked out the window waiting for Dobby to appear again. He'd been making laps around the house sniffing, I swear, every strand of grass and twig on the ground like he was patrolling. Works for me. This area was far larger than there was currently folks to watch it.I filled her and JoAnn on what happened and I could tell Kera was almost as surprised about me being alive after my confrontation with Frank as she was relieved to hear about Linda. It seemed to win me some brownie points with her as she became more open with me after telling her.
As Kera studied me, I was doing the same with JoAnn who continued to throw me. I turned to her as I heard the refrigerator door open and she pulled out several beers, handing one out to me without even asking Kera. For someone who bitched about being in a prison, she was sure getting comfortable here.
"Drink up while you can but don't get drunk. I wanna head out as soon as Nancy agrees."
This did get a reaction from Kera as I felt her eyes break off me to turn to my sister as if she'd lost her mind.
"Tonight? It's not even the full moon yet and-"
"I don't care!" JoAnn said in a slightly raised voice as she sat the beer on the table with a hard thud. The sound making me jump a little.
While JoAnn had been putting on a good front since I arrived, I was sure she was about to boil over. It seemed I was right.
"Ashley is being hunted while we're waiting here doing nothing and we both know that will happen if they catch her..."
Her face softened just for a moment as she seemed to think on it before hardening back up "nevermind. That's not going to happen. They killed my parents! I thought maybe somehow they would stop there, but after what happened, I know they won't. They wont stop till we're dead, or they are. Once I accepted that, the rest fell into place. I'd much rather they be the ones to die rather than myself. How about you? And you want to know something? I'm actually really liking the idea of getting some payback for putting an image in my head I'll never get out. I'm done being scared. I've been terrified since I was almost killed. It's their fuckin turn."
Kera shot up out of her seat clearly not liking JoAnns tone. Now I was getting worried but JoAnn didn't even blink.
"Ashley isn't going to be happy-"
"Yeah, well guess what? She's already not happy with me anyway in case you didn't notice. At least this way she'll have a chance to get over it. She won't be able to do shit if we're all dead, now will she?"
They stared each other down like two rival boxers at a promotion. Kera was a little taller and thinner but I'd give JoAnn a weight advantage if this was a regular match.
"Both of you need to calm down." I said standing up myself now. I thought I was helping but I was wrong.
"I will not be ordered by a -"
Her head spun towards the window at the sound of Dobby barking. He was about thirty yards away from the house looking up on the hillside. The sun had lowered since I arrived making it harder to see what he was barking at.
"Get your gun ready." Kera said in a soft voice that wasn't much louder than a whisper as she scanned the view outside the window. I glimpsed JoAnn leave us alone as my eyes looked for anything out of the ordinary. It was starting to get darker but there was still good light and there wasn't think tree coverage on the hills either. Even I should be able to spot anything coming on them from here.
"There's nothing out there. Dobby's just barking at your mate or one of the others I guess. He doesn't know them very well." I told her annoyed that he would scare the shit out of me like that. After tapping on the window a few times, I had enough and headed out to get him to shut up.
