The next day, since it was a weekend, I basically just watched TV and finished my projects and homework until 8pm. When it was time to leave I had butterflies in my stomach.
Charlie yelled at me, well that's an improvement, telling me that she wants to see it all happen in her little animated eyes. I sighed and stuffed her in my backpack. She probably didn't really appreciate that, I headed off to school.
Once I got to the parking lot Jack was waiting for me. "Hey Ella, are you ready to investigate?" I nodded.
"Well what are we waiting for? Let's go!" And we entered into the doors of Slinger High school.
The long narrow hallway was pitch black. Jack pulled a flashlight out of his bag. "Talk about prepared." I enthused. "Hey I live by a motto, better to have more than enough than not have enough, am I right?" Jack said. I agreed and we made our way into the dark hallway.
The freezing winter air hit me like the Titanic hitting the iceberg. I started to shiver, even though I had on a jacket. It must've been at least 30 degrees in this school. "Do you need another jacket?"
"Don't tell me you brought jackets." Jack snickered. "No, but." Jack slipped his jacket off his shoulders and put it onto mine. "There, problem solved." Jack said.
"Well now your going to be cold." I said. "Don't worry about me, I would rather be cold than see you shiver."
I smiled, Jack is such a nice person. Humble, kind, loving, sometimes clueless. I wonder what I would be like if I ever was homeschooled. "Look, over there." Jack pointed into the blackness of the hallway. I could barely make it out, but it looked like one of the classroom lights were on. Jack and I snuck down the hallway.
"What do you think it could be?" I asked. "Oh I don't know, aliens plotting to take over our planet."
"Shut up," I said playfully. "but really, what do you think it is?" Jack shrugged in the dim light. "Want to go check it out?" He asked. "Sure." And we walked down the hallway. We got to the light, and Jack peered in.
"What, what is it?" I whispered. "It looks like, like," Then Jack started to make a zombieish kind of noise.
He acted like the light was killing him or something. "Jack, Jack!" I whisper yelled. He fell to the floor in the darkness.
"OMG, Jack! What happened to you!" I started to raise my voice. I started to touch him, scared that he might be contagious. "Ah." He jumped at me, I screamed. "Hey hey, calm down. It was just a prank." Jack laughed.
We sat against the wall. "That was not funny!" I said solemnly. I then playfully punched his shoulder, making sure it wasn't too hard.
"Hey, you gotta say. That was pretty funny." Jack smiled at me. Making me helpless but to smile back. "Ok, ok, that was pretty funny. But don't ever do that to me again. You almost gave me a heart attack!" I joked. Jack and I both smiled at each other for the longest time.
Then I cut in saying. "Why is that light on?" Jack looked into the room. "Some teacher probably left it on or something." I sighed in relief.
"What, were you worried the zombie apocalypse was coming?" Jack said. I giggled. "No, but I just thought that a maniac with a chainsaw would come out. You know the usual horror movies where the boy gets killed first." Jack smirked. "I like you Ella, your different from the rest."
"Is that a compliment I'm hearing?"
"Yes, your different than the other girls I've met at school. And in a good way." Honestly I thought he would kiss me right then and there.
Then a noise interrupted us. BANG! It made both of us jump. "Please tell me that was you." I pleaded. "I was going to ask the same thing for you." Jack whispered.
BANG! I wanted to scream and run away as fast as I could like a little girl. But I had Jack by my side, and I felt safer with him. Plus he had a backpack full of useful things so he could use it as a weapon. Me, all I had was an annoying picture, who was surprisingly being quiet. "We should investigate it." Jack said.
"No, don't you know that in every horror movie the thing that gets everyone killed is investigating?" Jack snickered.
"It's not like a vampire exists or anything." Jack said. "Fine, we shouldn't split up though." I warned.
And we plunged into the blackness of the hallway, with only a flashlight and two scared teens.
