The day's flew by mostly bogged down by homework, study groups and exams. It was a serious time for both Pari and Dev bur they managed to give time to each other. One thing that annoyed Pari was that all the kids at school teased her about Dev, calling them boyfriend and girlfriend when it wasn't like that at all. Dev didn't seem to mind it - he would have loved to lay claim to Pari. There were many guys who seemed interested in her and he couldn't do anything about them making advances toward her.
One day closer to their mid year break, Pari approached Dev at lunch time looking coy. They had had different subjects beforehand so didn't get out to lunch at the same time."Did you eat?" She asked fidgeting with her fingers.
"Yea, I was starving! You better eat" Dev said eyeing the sandwich is her hand.
"I'm not too hungry, the weirdest thing just happened."
"What?"
"Sid just asked me out on a date!" She said looking shy. But Dev noticed her eyes sparkle with a nervous excitement. Did she like Sid? He had never taken note of their exchanges and tried to think back - she hadn't mentioned him much outside of school either.
"You said no right?" Dev didn't want to think about the other alternative. She had to have said no - Sid wasn't right for her.
"Uhm actually I said yes. I mean it's nothing romantic just for ice cream after school."
"What? You're going out with him? But ice cream is our thing!" Dev saw green. How could she do that to him?
"Dev c'mon we didn't agree to have ice cream tonight so I'll just go spend some time with him. No harm in that right?" She saw the change in Dev's face. Why was he being so weird? Shouldn't he be happy for her?
"Sure whatever you want" he felt dejected and heart broken. How could she agree to a date with Sid? "So I guess I won't see you tonight?" He asked bitterly.
"No I'll meet you after!" She said seeing how upset he looked. She wasn't sure if being out for the entire afternoon was such a good idea with the amount of work they had but she didn't like seeing Dev so upset. He was the most important to her.
"I have an assignment due tomorrow for accounting. So I'll just see you tomorrow at school. You have fun with Sid!" He said, standing up to leave. She watched him walk off wondering what on earth just happened. Why couldn't he just be a supportive friend? This was her first date!
Later that night as Dev was finalising his assignment he heard Pari's window open. He was curious about her date but thinking about it made his stomach churn with jealousy. He decided to ignore it and continue his work.
"Dev?" Pari called out gently. He heard her and didn't want to respond. He didn't want to hear about amazibg her date was. What if they had held hands? Kissed? The sheer thought made him feel ill. But he could never ignore her. He pushed his curtains aside and slid the window open. There she was, illuminated by moonlight, looking like a princess. His heart performed summersaults inside his run cage.
"Oh good you're there" she said in an audible whisper.
"What's up?" He asked casually popping his head out.
"Nothing, just wanted to see you." Something in her voice wasn't right.
"Cmon tell me what's wrong." He pushed.
"Sid wasn't very nice" she said not meeting Dev's eyes. She had hoped her first date would have been much better than it was. Unfortunately he hadn't been the gentleman she had expected. She explained to Dev that he had wanted to kiss her and kept insisting while she pushed him away. Hearing this made Dev's blood boil - how dare he try to kiss her? This was his worst fear!
"I won't be going out with him again! But please don't let maa find out she would kill me - you know I have a no dating rule until I finish school""Of course I won't tell..." he didn't want to break her trust. But he did want to break Sid's nose.
