My heart fluttered and I tried not to panic. Transferring schools had kind of become a norm for me by now, to be honest, so I was prepared for the stares.

What I wasn't prepared for was was happened when I stepped in the huge building.

"See you later, bro," Ian said, putting the car into park and basically ejecting me out. "I'm gonna go see if I can't get a slice out of that fine piece of pizza."

I looked to where he gazed, and I saw a girl laughing with two of her friends.

After a second, I turned to Ian and said, eyes wide, "That's not a piece of pizza. That's a chick."

He punched my shoulder, causing me to hit the hood of the car.

"Screw off." Ian hissed, and I punched him back. "At least I will." I called over my shoulder, looking back at him. "Unlike you and Pepperoni over there."

That was where I made my mountain of a mistake. Ian's face went red and he made a face. But the problem was: I was watching.

I felt my life flash before my eyes, my ears rang with the impact, and I was on the ground.

When my senses stopped spinning, I looked up. I had run into the front door. So much for any sort of cool. I thought.

But then I realized. A girl stood over me. Pretty cute. Blonde. Definitely my type.

"Hey girl," I said. I could feel that I had a double chin, but I tried to continue despite it. "I guess you could say I fell for you."

Her mouth twitched, and I had hope, but instead, she stood up. "I could, but that would be three too many words that I could spare on a nerd like you."

"BUT-" I started, "I fell for you is four words."

I watched as a boy leaned over and whispered in the girl's ear.

After a moment, she looked back down at me. "I know. That's because I can give you one word."

My hope and game shattered as I lay on the cold, slightly sticky ground, I tried to press on. "And what's that?"

She turned, her blue skater skirt almost hitting me in the face. "Bye."

I lay back on the ground, turning my head to the side to truly appreciate the wad of gum miserably stuck to the concrete next to my head.
