24 May, 09:15 A.M.
Haneul is preparing breakfast when he hears his phone ring in the bedroom. He turns off the induction cooktop to go and answer it. But before he reaches the room, the phone stops ringing. He picks it up and looks at the missed call. The doctor calls Dae Ho again, connects his AirPods, and goes back to the kitchen. Dae Ho's phone rings but he doesn't answer. Haneul dials the number again.
"The number you're trying to call is currently switched off. Please try again later." The automated voice informs, a beeping tone following right after it.
"He just called me and now turned his phone off when I call back. An odd man." Haneul shrugs pulling out his AirPods. "Maybe it's not important." He leaves a message asking why Dae Ho called him and proceeds to have his breakfast.
"Blueberry pancakes, here I come!" Haneul digs in, pouring maple syrup over them. "Crap! I'm late!" he bemoans glancing at the clock nailed on the wall. Taking big bites, the doctor finishes his food and rushes to the hospital.
"Kim Haneul and Kim Minho, you both will be on night duty for three days and the new interns will take over the rest of the week." Doctor Min announces, writing their names in his log.
"Understood!" The young doctors bow to the salt and pepper-haired man, groaning as soon as he leaves.
"These are going to be some long nights." Kim Minho nudges Haneul. "If I was the director, I'd be lenient on new workers."
Haneul chuckles at his cousin's statement. "Yeah, then work hard for it." If he's spending nights at the hospital, the doctor needed to inform Xue Yang about it. He fishes out his phone and calls the man, moving to the end of the room for some privacy.
"I can't come to the club for three days," he notifies, a hand around his mouth, voice low.
"Alright."
And Haneul's days get busy, and it's only after he's back at the club that he recalls Dae Ho's missed call.
"What do you mean he canceled all his matches for two weeks?" The crimson-haired man asks Xue Yang. He pulls out his phone and calls Dae Ho.
"The number you're trying to call is currently switched off. Please try again later."
"Argh!" Haneul groans, a frustrated hand tugging the ends of the hair behind his ear. "He isn't responding to my messages either!" He turns to Xue Yang, who is picking on his nails nonchalantly. "What did he exactly tell you?"
"He said something came up and he won't be able to fight." Xue Yang replies with a wave of his hand.
"And when was this exactly?"
"Today in the morning."
"Oh, so he's seen my messages and missed calls but ignored me. What is going on?" Haneul's brows draw together in confusion, tongue wetting his chapped lips. Underground fighting is a source of income for Dae Ho and the younger never misses his matches unless and until he has a good reason. With cluttered thoughts, the doctor leaves the fight club. He waits for two more days before visiting the fighter's home.
Haneul rings the doorbell repeatedly but no one answers. He puts down the packets in his hand and takes out his mobile phone.
