It's a beautiful day to be riding today, I thought to myself as Philip, my horse, and I galloped down the trail. We were riding in the woods behind my house. It's a quiet place where we live, we live in the countryside of Northern Pennsylvania. I remember the first time I tried to ride Philip a few years ago, I fell off and when I started to tear up, Philip nudged me with his wet nose. That tickled and made me feel better. Philip and I are just going on the normal morning routine, with a different route, when all of a sudden, Philip stopped dead in his tracks.
"Philip, what's wrong? You never stop like that."
I got down and looked into his eyes. He looked like he'd just seen a ghost. I tried to comfort him as I got back onto the saddle and rode back home.
I ate breakfast and remembered I would be home alone that day. I went to my bedroom when I heard a horse whinie in the woods, I thought of nothing but Philip, even if I could have sworn I had put him in the stables before I came in. I ran downstairs and into the woods, not knowing what I would see.
As I got to the spot I thought I heard the horse neigh, I saw Philip, laying there motionless. Dead. That's all I could think about. Philip is dead. I crouched down next to his head and started to cry. Philip was my horse since I was a little girl. I got him from my grandma when I was 6, that was 9 years ago, and my grandma is dead. My grandma had died when I was 10. Philip and I have been through so much, it was heartbreaking to find out he had been killed. I stopped crying and in the distance, I heard howling, then running.
I ran not knowing what else to do. I was now in my bedroom closet, hiding from whatever killed Philip.
