Roslyn was sitting in a holding area in aMacomb County looking around, wondering what everyone else was doing there. She could clearly make snap judgments about all the people waiting with her, also in handcuffs, but she didn't want to be judgmental. Roslyn's sister Rachel would tell her what everyone would say about her and it took years for Roslyn to figure out none of it was true."I am sorry to tell you, Ros, but Aunt Deb told me she doesn't like you. Actually, she laughed about you a little. She said you talk too much"
Roslyn remembered how hurt she felt that anyone did not like her.
Maybe if I just don't talk when I am around her, she won't think that, she thought. Roslyn would try to rationalize with herself about how she could be better, do better to. She wanted to be likable and it was important to her that people liked her.
When Roslyn looked disappointed, Rachel would snap at her "Why do you care what people think anyway! That's what's wrong with you, Ros, you care too much about what other people think!"
Roslyn would go into her room and cry about how stupid she was. Why couldn't she just not care, and learn to not talk so much. Was this all life and learning stuff? Or was it just who she was? Was she destined to be unloved?
BZZZZZZZZZZZ a loud buzzer went off as Detective Shackett approached the front window of the Police Station. Over the loudspeaker, a muted woman's voice made a statement that Roslyn couldn't make out. Soon after, Detective Shackett walked through a windowed steel door to the right of the main window and handed over her gun for inspection. Roslyn was led by the other detective through the same doorway behind detective Shackett. As the woman standing by that door gave the detective her gun back, Roslyn realized what the muted voice had said, 'Please remove all weapons and any metal'.
Roslyn was dazed out about that and didn't even realize the other detective that escorted her inside the doorway did not follow them inside. Just when Roslyn looked back to confirm he left, the steel door slammed and locked. Detective Shackett was already staring at Roslyn, waiting for Roslyn to meet her eyeline.
"Ready?" Said Detective Shackett looking at Roslyn
"Hey there, stranger!" Shackett was quickly interrupted by Detectives she knew. A few came up to her and whispered in a friendly way, as if they were congratulating her. Roslyn could tell they were whispering about her. Am I like a prized bust, or something? Roslyn thought.
Roslyn still felt comfortable with Detective Shackett even though Shackett relentlessly proved she was not her friend. Roslyn was familiar with her, and knew what to expect with her. Roslyn was more concerned about who was about to join them.
Just then, a door behind her, slammed closed. Roslyn didn't hear it open. She didn't know where she was or how she got into an interrogation room. She was escorted to sit down at the chair right in front of her.
In behind them walked a confident, dark haired woman in a grey power suit, followed by two male police officers. The woman walked directly up to Detective Shackett and paid no mind to Roslyn, even though Ros was turned in her chair to recognize who walked in.
"Why can't you leave this well enough alone. Let us take it from here, Francis"
"It's Detective Shackett, Sam. This is my case, you can't have it"
Just then, the power suit turned her head to Roslyn, acknowledging her. She then turned to Francis.
"Let's talk in there" Chief Samantha Holsten said to Francis Shackett as she nodded towards the room in front of Roslyn's chair.
Both women went inside the police-only room and it wasn't long before everyone got quiet trying to listen in, because the women were clearly yelling. It was muffled, but Roslyn could make out the tone, knowing they were not friends.
Sam Holsten left the private room, with Francis Shackett following right behind, then stopped in front of Ros, then turned her head back and said,
"I'll be sending Detective Green over to join Ms. Shackett in just a moment"
"DETECTIVE Shackett!" Francis corrected, rolling her eyes. "She has no respect" She said under her breathe.
The door swung open when Detective Holsten left the interrogation Room and the room full of officers and detectives walking back and forth through the precinct couldn't hide that they were ease dropping.
Roslyn felt like she would sit in that chair forever. Now she had to wait for someone else to come by to start the show. How draining. Roslyn looked up from staring at her feet and there she was, Detective Green. She was poised and quiet, and Roslyn didn't even hear her coming. "Well, let's get this party started" Detective Green said in a calm, quiet voice. Roslyn got the feeling the Detective Green was not much of a partier, and she was right.
Detective Green graduated first in her class at Wayne State in the criminal justice program. She was one of the first female officers to make detective within 5 years and, she was also the only female of color to make detective under the age of 27. Shackett was even impressed by her, which is why Chief Holsten put her on this case, to show up Shackett.
