Chapter 24Chapter 24- Gone
Jolt's eyes stung, his lungs burned, and his paws ached, but none of that mattered as he sprinted through the snow. It didn't even feel like snow beneath his paws. In fact, he felt nothing except the intense, all-consuming need to save his little girl. The pack still hadn't caught sight of him, more focused on getting to their destination and keeping the Vaporeon in check, but Jolt's eyes hadn't left them for a second. He would be damned if he let them get away, and twice damned for what they were sure to do to her.
Sparky didn't know who had trail blazed the path after the kidnappers, but she silently thanked Arceus for that Pokémon. If not, she probably would have hurt herself in a nasty fall by now, without headlong and recklessly she was sprinting. The others found themselves constantly having to use quick attack and always out of breath, save Breeze with her seemingly endless endurance, but Sparky didn't care about her fatigue. All that mattered was getting her daughter back. That thought alone drove her past her friends, who even then were struggling to keep up, now left were to provide back up for when she caught the pack. She was running so fast that didn't come as too great of a shock to her when she rounded a corner and saw some bright green Jolteon, and more importantly, the bastards who kidnapped Angel. In a few long strides she caught up to him, and he seemed a lot more surprised to see her than she did him. "Sparky! What are you-" he began through pants, but he didn't get a chance to finish that sentence. In front of them, the pack was slowing down.
"Mom!" Angel frantically screamed, and kicked one of the wolf Pokémon who were holding her in the face. "Mom, help me!" Seeing her mother and some other Jolteon come to rescue her drove the Vaporeon into hysterics, making her thrash about wildly at her kidnappers. It was too late for stealth and surprise now, and luckily neither of the Jolteons had lost any momentum yet. Sparky feinted to the side to make a run for Angel, but Jolt spiked out into a deadly green ball, and slammed right into the midst of them. He injured several on the initial impact, then braked hard and unleashed a barrage of lethal electric pin missiles into the stunned Mightyena. He heard screams of pain and saw several drop to the floor, bloody and full of electric blue darts.
The remaining conscious Mightyena were forced to regroup into a tight knit circle, defending the one in the center who was defending the Vaporeon. Their numbers had dropped drastically after the initial impacts, and now there were only 4 left, the center one making 5. Jolt and Sparky took up a position next to each other, and for a solid minute, the two sides did nothing but leer at each other. It was silent, the only sound coming from the wind rustling the trees and the heavy breathing of the Pokémon after their hard run. It didn't last, however, as suddenly the sound of several hard paw steps slowly began to be heard. The Mightyena were confused, but Sparky gave them a wicked grin. In a flash, her reinforcements rounded the corner and jumped beside her, giving the Eevees the advantage of numbers. Now, the Mightyena began to look worried, despite their best efforts not to show it. The only female came to the conclusion that defeat was inevitable first, and she began to whisper to the leader, the one who carried angel. "Skull, we can't stay here... Marlin's waiting, and we're outnumbered..."
Skull was a prideful Pokémon, but he had the skills and battle experience to back it up. When he slowly nodded in agreement, the others of their party knew they were in trouble. However, Skull wasn't the type to let himself be put in a tough situation, let alone be defeated. "Fall back!" he called as he took off toward the rendezvous point, followed closely by the rest of his party. Jolt was confused about why they would just turn tail and run, but Sparky took the opportunity. The Jolteons immediately took off after them, firing mercilessly at the fleeing Mightyena. One dropped, bringing the party down to 3, and Skull was forced to fall to the back to cover his pack mates. Jolt and Sparky were forced to pick their shots more carefully not to avoid hitting Angel, which drastically reduced the number of them.
From there, the Mightyena broke into a dead sprint over the icy terrain, racing toward the safety of the point only Skull knew about. Jolt and Sparky ran as fast as they could after them, trying to cut off the leader, but he would block their shot on his pack mate whenever they had a lock. Jolt and Sparky didn't understand the urgency of stopping the hunting party, which Skull was relived to discover. The Jolteons knew they could easily outlast the Mightyena, but they didn't know they had a small window to stop them, a window that was closing quickly.
Skull gave a triumphant shout when the rendezvous point came into view; a small clearing amid a dense portion of pines. Jolt didn't know why they were happy, and Sparky voiced his confusion. "What are you guys so excited about? The fact that we're gonna beat your asses without mercy?" She called, hoping to gull them into another fight, or at least slowing down. She received no reaction, however; in fact, they only sped up a little, the exhausted Pokémon somehow finding it in them to run faster. Out of the blue, she heard the sound of several explosions behind her, several screams of pain, and a deafening roar. Jolt skidded to a halt to see what had happened, but he immediately wished he hadn't; several giant scorch marks dotted the land, and their allies lay scattered, burned, and unconscious. Jolt took a second to analyze the sight, but couldn't see anything that could have been the cause of the roar. All he saw was a large dark mass, zooming along the ground in his direction. Look up! His brain screamed at him, and he realized what he saw was a shadow. The Pokémon who made it was 10 times more horrifying. Jolt glanced up to see a Salamance no less than 30 feet from him and closing fast. Jolt cringed and braced himself as it gave another mighty roar, and blasted him with a powerful Dragon Breath.
Jolt was thrown off his feet and into the air, where he flew for almost 7 seconds until, steaming, he landed painfully on the unforgiving snow earth, and rolling for what felt like miles. He was out the moment he hit the ground, and Sparky almost tripped over his rolling body. She hadn't turned back to see the source of the roars yet, and frankly, she didn't want to. Now she understood where the Mightyenas were running to; the safety of their reinforcements. "Mom, look out!" Angel screamed, and Sparky had only enough time to look at her daughter's terrified face before she too heard an explosion and was blown off her feet. Sparky screamed in an agonizing pain, as the blast had hit her far more directly than the others. She was blown forward, causing her to roll hard and painfully, stopping just before the Mightyenas.
The wolf Pokémon finally allowed themselves to stop and rest. Angel was screaming something, but Sparky was so fazed by the blast and the intense pain that she couldn't register what she was trying to say. She heard the sound of four heavy thuds, the sound of the Salamance landing, then looked up to see all 3 of them clambering onto its back. "N-No..." she choked, reaching a paw out desperately. "Please... N-Not my daughter..." Skull glanced down at her and gave her a pitying look. "I'm sorry," he mouthed, and then was gone, along with Angel. Her little girl was gone. Once Sparky registered that, she too joined her friends in unconsciousness.
