It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.

Every year a birthday happens. Many go all out for their birthdays by throwing amazing, big parties or celebrate quietly with close friends and family. Some just simply celebrate by themselves. However, birthdays remind some people of traumatic events. They would refuse to celebrate their birthdays and acknowledged that they turned 18, 21, or even 30 years old.

Chan was in the middle.

The last time he celebrated his birthday was with his mom, dad, and grandma. He was turning eight years old. He remembers Nayeon and her family attending as well as his other childhood friends and classmates.

Now that all of them are gone from the earth except for Nayeon, he hardly celebrates his birthday. It brought in so many memories. Traumatic ones as well. Every day he would think about how his parents would be when he was older. Chan would make a toast to living for another day at his age with his shot of soju.

That all changed when he attended Shujin Academy.

Chan woke up to a text from Ms. Yuri on the day of his birthday.

Ms. Yuri: Happy birthday, Channie! There's a special package being sent to your room... wearing it to the fall formal is best! Enjoy your day!

Chan went to the front door. He opened the door and spotted a small, brown box by his doorstep. Picking it up, he smirked to himself. It was the first time Yuri was acting like a mother to him. She was indeed the first person to tell him happy birthday.

On the box was a small note:

Chan,

Happy birthday. Sorry I couldn't be there to celebrate it with a nice cup of hazelnut coffee. Use this accessory for the fall formal. Enjoy!

- Yuri

Closing the door behind him quietly, he places the box on his bed. Grabbing his keychain pocket knife, Chan flickered the knife and cut through the sealed box. Removing the blue paper from the box, there laid a small black box with cufflinks. Coated in metallic gold, the circular cufflinks shined in the daylight. Inside the cufflinks were ruby red dragons.

"Daebak..." Chan chuckles.

Later on, Felix was the second to wish Chan happy birthday. Treating him to a Coke and sweet honey bread for breakfast, Chan was energized and ready to begin his day like any other normal school day.

Chan grabbed his chemistry textbook from his locker and placed it in his bag. Closing the locker door, Mina appeared by his locker slightly scaring Chan. She smiled at Chan teasingly.
