Percy didn't care that he wasn't a kid anymore. He was allowed to be as excited as his younger sibling at their day out.
"Four blue raspberry slushies, please." Percy slid some cash across the counter.
"Can we get cotton candy too? Pretty please Percy?" Percy looked at his little sister's puppy dog eyes and knew he couldn't refuse, so he sighed and emptied some change out of his pocket. "And a cotton candy."
Estelle cheered.Estelle was Percy's half-sister. His mom was married to her dad, Paul Blofis. Paul was a great guy. The couple had been going out for years before he finally proposed, and Percy loved him like a father. Percy's father, though... His mom had never been married to anyone but Paul, but she told Percy a long time ago that his father was Poseidon, Greek god of the ocean. Percy still wasn't sure that he fully believed her, but it made sense in some strange ways. First, the obsession with blue food. Also, he was always happiest when by the sea. But most importantly, it explained why he could do things, weird things, things like-
"Sorry, man, we just refilled the machine. It could be up to ten minutes before the slushies are ready. I could do you some colas instead?"
Estelle slumped and her lip began to wobble.
"We'll wait, thanks. Those machines can be... inconsistent."
The man shrugged, said, "Suit yourself," and began serving the next customer.
Estelle stared at the churning machine as if the sheer force of her gaze could freeze the liquid inside. Percy also gazed at the slushy machine, but unlike Estelle, he had the power to do something. As he watched, he felt a familiar tug in his gut and tiny ice crystals began to form on the inside of the glass. His little sister gave a quiet gasp. The relentless spinning of the blades began to slow as the mixture thickened. Percy had to make a mental effort to stop before the entire thing froze completely. Yeah. Percy could do things. Weird things, like that. The man serving turned around to grab an ice cream from the freezer and noticed the slushy machine.
"What the-" He gazed at Percy. "I've never seen it freeze that fast before."
Percy just shrugged.
