New Rome University had finished for the holidays and Percy was visiting his mom and Paul at home. Annabeth was spending time at her dad's, trying to repair their relationship, so Percy was missing her very much. When Paul and Sally went to work, and Estelle went to kindergarten, it got very lonely in the house by himself.

Percy subconsciously fingered the drachma in his pocket. In the past ten minutes he had taken it out five times. One time, he had almost tossed it into a rainbow, but then he thought of how hard Annabeth was trying to bond with her family, and to take a break from mythology; how selfish he would be to ruin that. He put the drachma back in his pocket.

Percy was watching TV when a key turned in the lock and Paul came in with Estelle. "Hey Percy!" He called. Percy hadn't even noticed the time.

"Hey Paul! Where's Mom?"

"You mean she's not back yet?"

They sat together in the kitchen. Percy phoned Sally every 5 minutes, and Paul stopped pacing to comfort Estelle. It had been almost an hour by the time Sally burst into the house, looking distressed.

Immediately, Paul was by her side.
"Are you okay? Where have you been? We tried phoning you- What's wrong honey?"

Sally ran a hand through her unusually tangled hair. "I'm fine. You're a darling, I'm really sorry, my mobile died earlier."

"Mommy!" Estelle interrupted, throwing her chubby arms around Sally's legs.
Sally smiled down at Estelle, Paul's arm around his wife's shoulders.

They were such a perfect family, Percy thought, looking at the three of them. He felt very out of place for a moment, and then Sally opened her arms and hugged him to her side too.

After a while, Estelle wriggled away from the group hug and the rest of them disentangled themselves. "So why were you so late home?" Percy asked.

"I got a call from Estelle's daycare and they said they would be closed tomorrow. I've been all over looking for someone to look after her, but everyone's busy. Of course, I would, but I need to open my shop."

Percy regretted it as soon as he opened his mouth, but it was too late.

"I could open the sweet shop for you?"

"Oh honey, really? That would be great!" Percy took one look at his mom's face and couldn't take it back. He couldn't let anyone down.

He had battled monsters, titans, and the Earth itself. He was the demigod son of Poseidon, twice saviour of Olympus and hero of two wars.

He could manage a candy store for one day.
