Best Friends

“Oi Cammy! Wait up!” Jayden shouted. I slowed my walking pace until he caught up with me. “You walk too fast.”

“I do not. You just walk like a turtle. Wait, let me rephrase that… you ARE a turtle” I joked while nudging him in the arm. Jayden and I are best friends. We’ve been bestfriends for a while actually. Don’t ask me how, one day we just met and we just got on really well. Hahaha that was like 11 years ago when I was six and he was seven.

“I’m not a turtle! I am a human being who is flawless! Bitches love me,” he said striking a pose. I burst out laughing looking like the creep that I am and cover my mouth with my hand, trying to block out the strange noise coming out of my mouth.

“Oh god Jayden. I hope you don’t do that pose after you score a goal in soccer,” I still try to hold in my laugh as Jayden smirks.

“How did you know that I do that fabulous pose?” he asked sarcastically doing it again while I let all of my laughter out.

“Omg you’re so gay,” I said rolling my eyes with a smile. We walked until we reached our houses where we walked our separate ways. Yeah, we live next door to each other because that’s what best friends do… kidding! Nah. That was how we met.

I was sitting down in the front yard picking up flowers for my nana when Jayden ‘accidentally’ splashed water on me with a hose. He said sorry but being the forgiving girl (note the sarcasm) I was, did not forgive him straight away because I was too busy covering up myself as my shirt went see through. Awkward… yes. But a while later, I forgave him and we became best friends. Cool story, I know bro. That’s the story of us, the end.

Just joking!

I walked into my house and slid my stupid school bag across the floor and slumped into a stool. I grabbed a red apple and started biting it, the juice flowing through my mouth.

“You’re home,” mum said walking in with my five year old brother, Todd.

“No shit Sherlock,” I replied before taking another bite. Don’t worry, mum allows me swearing at this age. Oh, I’m seventeen if you’re wondering.

“Whatever, I’m going out tonight so can you babysit Todd for me?” she asked with a pleading look.

“Ugh, fine but I’m bringing Jayden over otherwise I’ll be bored,” I said.

“That’s fine. As long as you two don’t make a mess in the house like you did last time,” she gave me a stern look while I tried to look innocent as possible. Last time Jayden came over, we attempted to make dinner but failed miserably as we only ended up making the kitchen messy and had no food on the table.

“You have my word,” I said with a grin. You’re probably wondering who my father is, well to be clear, he died when I was twelve from cancer. Since then, mum’s tried to move on but she’s just been going to parties at clubs and stuff but at least she’s working during the day to support the family. That’s what I’m grateful for. I’ve read in stories that when the person’s father dies, the mum becomes abusive and alcoholic. But mum has never abused me but she does go clubbing and drink to get the thoughts of dad out of her head.
