Childhood Memories

The next morning I woke up extremely early. I don’t know why and I don’t know how. I heard Jayden groan next to me as he turned so he was on his side. He is such a kid. I got out carefully and went outside of the house, feeling the cold air breeze past me. It was then I saw a familiar car pull up on my driveway and high heels come out of it. Mum.

She looked a bit tipsy still as she tried to walk straight but failed as she nearly fell over.

“Mum!” I ran up to her and helped her walk into the house.

“Oh hello Cammy. I’m sorry I haven’t been home lately,” she said looking a little bit sorry.

“It’s okay, let’s just get you to bed,” I said and took her upstairs to her room. She laid down and nearly fell asleep.

“By the way Cammy. I’m going to get married next week…” she said before dozing off to sleep. My eyes widen as I slowly backed away from her. No. This can’t be happening. Before I knew it, I was running out of the house. She better be lying or else. I sat down in front of my doorstep, cuddling my knees.

“Are you okay?” I looked up to see Jayden looking down at me worried. I nodded before he sat down next to me. I leaned my head onto his shoulder as he put his arm around me. “What happened?”

“Well I woke up early to find my mum stumbling out of the car, drunk and then when I put her to bed she told me she was going to get married next week. Who does that to their children? You know, leave them for a few days and suddenly show up and say that they are in engaged?” I felt tears run down my cheeks.

“Woah, wait? She’s engaged? To who?” Jayden looked surprised and I was too.

“I-I don’t know. It must be some guy she met at a club or something but Jayden if they do marry, I’m going to have a stepfather and I don’t want to. What if he’s abusive? Or he doesn’t care about anything?” I asked looking scared.

“Shhhh, it’s okay Cammy. I’m sure it was just her drunken words,” Jayden said and pulled me closer to him. Yeah right.

“I just don’t want her to get hurt again. She’s already been hurt and look at how she reacted,” I explained.

“She won’t and if that guy does hurt you or your mum, he’ll have to deal with me first,” Jayden reassured me.

“Thanks Jayden. You’re the best, you know that right?” I kissed him on the cheek and snuggled into his shoulder.

“I know that I’m the best. I always have been,” he joked. I rolled my eyes before I playfully slapped his arm. He got up and I looked at him wondering where he was going. He just smirked and held his hand out which I gratefully took and he started dragging me somewhere.

“Where are we going?” I asked whilst giggling. Don’t ask me why I was giggling, I just was.

“The park of course,” he replied tugging me along the narrow footpath. The park; where Jayden and I used to hang out all the time when we were kids. It brings back so many memories.

“Here, sit down and I’ll push you,” Jayden said as he gestured to the swing. I happily sat down as Jayden went behind me and pushed my back causing the swing to move. He did it a couple of times til I was soaring into the blue sky. After a while, I stopped and got up to give Jayden a go. Jayden sat down and grinned.

“What?” I asked looking at him confusingly.

“Sit down,” he said and patted his thighs.

“No. I’ll break the swing,” I pouted. Jayden glared at me.

“No you won’t. You’re light as a feather,” he said.

“I highly doubt that Jayden. Anyways, you have a go first.”

Oh good old childhood memories.

“Race you to the swings,” I said and ran off towards the swing.

“No fair!” Jayden shouted behind me but being the turtle that I am, Jayden caught up to me and grabbed me by the waist, pulling me down onto the ground. I screamed as I landed on the damp grass.

“I’m going to bloody get a wet patch Jayden and it’s your fault,” I huffed before giggling. I swear I was on a high.

“I’m sah sorrayyy Cammy but you cheated,” Jayden said and snuggled his head in between my shoulder and neck.

“Well I didn’t really because you knocked me down,” I rolled my eyes and got up, brushing all of the wet grass off me. Jayden copied and we were soon grass free. “Jayden, piggy back.”

“Oh fine,” he said and I hopped onto his back as he started heading towards the swings.
