While I walked upstairs I started thinking about tonight. Well actually "thinking" might be a bit of a stretch. I kinda just screamed in my head for about 15 seconds and then just stopped half-way up the stairs to gather myself. What's going on? One minute I hate him more than anyone else and the next we're almost kissing? God, really need to sort myself out. I kept walking up the stairs and into my room. I knew Mila was staying the night but she wasn't there. I went to Max's room and peaked through the door. There she was, snuggled up next to Max. They had obviously come home and decided to watch a movie or something because his laptop was on his knees. They were both asleep so I quietly tiptoed in, shut the laptop, put it on his desk and put a blanket over them. They're so cute together. I walked back to my room and get into bed. I go over the nights happenings again in my head and find myself smiling like an idiot. Eventually I fall asleep. The next morning I woke up, got dressed and went downstairs to make some coffee. I see Max and Mila already down there cooking breakfast and talking.
"Morning," says Mila, turning and looking at me.
"Morning," I say smiling.
"So how's your boyfriend?"
"What?" says Max suddenly intrigued.
"She's just kidding," I say. "I took Aaron to McDonalds last night for a burger because he was drunk as hell and I felt bad for him."
"I'm sorry, you felt bad for Aaron?" Max said.
"Yeah. He barfed on my shoe for god sakes, what was I meant to do?"
"I dont know, make him coffee?"
"I did, it didn't help."
"So wait, you made him coffee and then took him to McDonalds?"
"Yeah. Bro, I wasn't going out of my way for him. I wanted to leave anyways plus I had nothing better to do."
"How about sleep? It was like one in the morning!"
"Bro, chill!"
"Sorry, I guess I'm just not used to you guys getting along," he said with a laugh.
"Yeah, I know what you mean, me neither. I can't really remember much but I think we don't hate each other now?"
They both just stood there, wide-eyed. I have to say, Mila's quite smart but this is taking a lot out of her to comprehend. As for Max, I think he still thinks I'm joking.
"Okay, well, if you two aren't gonna say anything imma just go get coffee from Will's."
"No, please stay, I want to hear all about you date!" said Mila laughing.
I grabbed my bag from the coat stand and made my way to the door.
"No seriously, please don't go, Mrs Aaron," said Max. By now they were both laughing hysterically.
I grabbed by bag and coat and started toward Will's. While I was walking I hear someone coming up behind me. I turn and see Aaron running to catch up with me.
"Hurry up, slow poke," I said, mimicking him from the previous day.
"How the tables have turned," he said as he caught up. "Where are you going?"
"Will's."
"Why'd I bother asking. Hey, um, do you wanna talk about last night?"
"I dont think there's much to talk about. You were wasted as fuck so I helped you."
"Yeah, but why?"
"God, why is everyone asking me that? I would've helped anyone if they were in the same state as you were."
"Yeah, but you didn't Zo."
"And what's up with the "Zo's" ? I'm sorry I helped you, okay, I won't next time."
"You know that's not what I meant Zoë."
"I'm sorry, I'm just sick of the interrogation. Can I just have some time alone please?"
I started walking faster. I think he knew I needed some space so he stopped and watched me walk away for a bit before turning around and walking home. I think he waited in case I turned back. He knew I wouldn't though. That's not me. Maybe I shouldn't have snapped like that. Soon I got to Will's. I ordered a large coffee and croissant and sat down in the corner booth, pulled out a book from my bag and stayed there for an hour or two. I don't understand the problem here? I honestly didn't think last night was that big a deal. Why was everyone trying to make it one? Eventually I made my way home. Mila was still there, in my room watching Disney.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey, sorry about earlier, Zo."
"Don't worry, I just didn't think it mattered that much. I mean it's just Aaron."
"Okay, I'll stop, I promise. And I'll make sure Max does the same but you have to understand, one second you hated him and now you're friends. We just needed a second to adjust. We're good now though."
"Okay, thanks. Hey, I need a new jacket, I can't get the drinks from last night out of mine, so you wanna come to the mall with me?"
Later Mila and I went shopping. When we got home we watched Netflix in Max's room and ordered Chinese food for dinner. At about 12.00am Mila went home because she'd slept at our house almost every day that week and needed to pack since she was staying with us for a while after that because her parents were going to Indiana for the next couple weeks. Max was already half asleep. I got ready for bed and was just getting under the covers when I heard something. I heard it again and looked around to see what it was. I looked at my window and saw what was making the noise. Someone was throwing little pebbles against it. I looked out and before I even saw him I knew who it was. I rolled my eyes and went downstairs, unlocked the door and Aaron was already standing on my doorstep.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
"I-uh-I wanted to talk to you."
"Okay."
We sat down on my porch steps.
"Look, I know you didn't think last night was anything but something kinda... I dont know... changed when I was leaning in to kiss you."
"Okay... I dont know what to say Aaron."
"I think some of the feelings from when I younger came back up. I know that we're meant to hate each other and everything and that it's all very sudden and-"
"Look Aaron, I dont know if I feel the same way...but... I also dont know if I don't. God my life is turning into a teen-romance movie."
"Yeah, I know what you mean."
"Oh hey have you told any of the boys about last night?"
"Yeah, they were all asking when I had lunch with them today."
"And?"
"Very confused."
"Mila and Max too."
"Shit."
"Pretty much sums it up."
"Zoë, I know you're not sure how you feel and all but why don't you come with me to a movie or something tomorrow and maybe you'll find out how you feel then?"
"Aaron, I-"
"Please?"
"Fine," I sighed.
"You won't regret it," he said, smiling like a little kid.
"Look, Aaron, if I do this you need to promise me two things, okay?"
"What are they?"
"First off, this is not a date. It is merely a "figure out your feelings for Aaron" friendship activity, okay?"
"Weird name but okay."
"Okay, and lastly, no one can know about this and when I say no one I mean no one. None of them would understand and you saw how they reacted to one burger let alone a date?"
"Not a date, a "figure out your feelings for Aaron" friendship activity."
"You think you're really cute don't you?"
"Maybe."
He was doing that thing again where he stares into my eyes except this time I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. He leaned in towards me but this time I did too. Our lips were less than an inch apart and then... they weren't. He held my waste and my hands were in his hair. He kissed me softly then leaned in further before pulling away.
"Night Zoë."
"Night Aaron."
