Part 17.

When it came down to rehearsals for The Voice, I had to bite my tongue more than once per session. Every time Adam gave a slightly funny remark, or said something that could be taken as an inside joke, I wanted to come back with something funny or flirty. Joe, the guy playing the piano during rehearsals had looked weird at me more than once already, and I knew I had to step up my game when it came to being discrete about all of this.

Adam didn’t seem to have that problem as much. He knew exactly what he could say and when, even when there we’re people around us. Adam was known for saying random things without a lot of thinking, so anytime he said anything that could be interpreted as “flirty”, nobody gave a damn, because he was Adam Levine and could pretty much do whatever the hell he pleased.

After a few weeks of rehearsing I got the hang of acting as if I wasn’t attracted to Adam when people were around. He did however make my whole act a lot harder to maintain, when he started pulling me into randomly picked closets or dressing rooms.

“Adam…” I moaned against his lips when he had pulled me into a dark corner on the set of The Voice. I gently pushed him away and could barely distinguish Adam’s smile from the darkness that was surrounding us. “What?” he asked, stills smiling. I knew he knew what I was talking about. I’d told him more than once that he wasn’t being as discrete as he should be, and that we were going to get caught one day and that the consequences would be disastrous. Adam always laughed my worries away, as if I was being silly. I got the impression he wasn’t taking this as serious as he should, but I could hardly do anything about it. I feared that as long we wouldn’t be caught, I wouldn’t be able to convince Adam of my opinion.

“Don’t be so uptight.” Adam chuckled while he pushed some hairs out of my face. To be honest, I was getting annoyed with him. I was the one being uptight because I was the only one who seemed to care about our careers, or more importantly: the careers of his friends and band members. I gently pushed his hand away and turned around, ready to get back on the set and act not suspicious at all.

Adam grabbed my hand before I could properly leave. “Ly, what’s wrong?”

My reaction might have been a little over the top, and I did feel guilty afterwards. But to be honest, I felt as if I was in my right to be irritated by Adam’s way of behaving.

“What’s wrong, Adam?” I said, breathing in and out, trying not to get too worked up. He just looked at me with his hazel eyes.

“What’s wrong is that you keep putting us in dangerous situations and act as if you’re too damn good to be caught. As if people aren’t noticing anything and as if you’re invincible to anything that could potentially harm you or anyone close to you. You act as if it’s all one big game, and I don’t think you realize that when you’re going down, we’re all going down.” I hissed, trying to make sure nobody heard us and at the same time trying to get through to Adam.

My breathing had become faster while I talked. I got more worked up than I intentionally wanted to, but it was too late to crawl back. This was the first time Adam and I had anything close to an argument, and for as far as I could see, I made it a pretty dramatic one.

The director of The Voice walked past us and didn’t pay any attention to either Adam or me. Adam let go of my arm and looked at me for a moment before he calmly said:
