THERE WAS NO such thing as 'Banishment' in Maze B, so Reggie's experience of betrayal was a little bit different.

The civilization used old school method of detention. Reward and punishment.

There was an assortment of punishments prepared by the Leaders, with stages of difficulty according to your wrongdoings. Helping the Chefs, plucking out weeds, scrubbing toilets, pulling hair strands out of the drains, throwing used tampons away —yes, tampons.

Girls could be nasty, but fortunately nobody ever resorted to torture or manslaughter. The worst stuff Reggie had to witness was a murderous cat fight full of broken nails, scratches, split knuckles, and bruises.

The offenders had to take care of toiletries every night for six months straight.

Were there Newbies who defied what the Leaders said and ran straight towards the Maze?

Yes, but the Trainers were patient enough to deal with it. They emphasized on the word 'family' quite a lot.

Reggie was a Mapper in his Maze —another word for Runner (he and Frankie had discussed what they still remembered about their Mazes' pattern and they were identical). The last thing he remembered was being welcomed back from his daily run and told that this month's Newbie was Rachel.

When he woke up, it was dark.

His head was pounding, like he had been hit by a truck or drank some sleeping pills. The latter would make much more sense.

At first he didn't recognize his surrounding. But, slowly but surely, his awareness returned. He scrambled onto his hands and feet with a start —he was inside the Maze.

"Whoa!"

When he looked ahead, Reggie could see the opened Door and the girls, safely standing inside the boundary of the ground.

"Hey!" Reggie called out, "What's happening?"

"We're sorry Reggie." It was Sonya. "You're different. You have to be eliminated."

"We can't go on with you." And it was Harriet.

"What?" Reggie chuckled dryly, "Very funny, guys. Aren't we family?"

The Door suddenly moved, rumbling as it proceeded to close.

"Wait— No! No! What—"

The girls smiled. They actually smiled.
