Part OneA cold, windy, rainy, drowsy Friday, some people would consider it a sad or unlucky day. For Newt and Tina Scamander, it was the luckiest day they could've imagined. It was the day their child was born and the day she would become their child.
After the First Wizarding War was over, many children had lost their parents and were placed in emergency housing and orphanages. Alice had been placed in one of those orphanages shortly after her second birthday. She was there for her third, then her fourth. But she wouldn't be there for her fifth. Because on her fourth birthday, she met Newt and Tina Scamander.
It was a gloomy day in Miss Johnson's home for young Wizards and Witches. Newt and Tina had no idea what a children's home would look like but it was still far worse than what they imagined. Twenty children in a three-bedroom house. Miss Johnson, short and narrow with a sweet glint in her eyes, sat at the table, laying out paperwork for the couple. Newt and Tina sat across from her, observing the cluttered kitchen around them.
"You will not believe how grateful I am that you guys are looking to adopt here," she smiles.
"We just looked for the nearest home. But I'm glad it worked out that way," Tina tells her.
Newt was staring at the full sink, water leaking from the faucet and hitting the dishes below.
"Now. Let's get started. What age are you looking for?" She asks.
Tina hums. "It doesn't really matter to us. We'd just like to meet them all and see what happens. Right, Newt?" She asks her husband.
His concentration broke. "Oh, yes, right."
Miss Johnson thinks for a moment. "The children are at recess right now. Would you like to see their work in the classroom first?" She suggests.
"That would be great," Tina says, still looking at Newt for any kind of reaction, to which he still has none.
They follow Miss Johnson into a small room added onto the side of the house. It's empty, except for one child who sits at a desk, sloppily painting a birdhouse. Her curly hair was put up in little pigtails and her overalls were stained with blue paint.
"Alice? What are you doing in here, sweetie? It's recess, go play," Miss Johnson suggests, kneeling down to the girl.
"But Mr. Freckles needs a home," she says in a sweet voice.
"Honey, it's your birthday. Don't you think you should spend it with your friends?" Miss Johnson whispers to her.
"Okay..." she gets up from her desk and sees Newt and Tina.
Tina waves at the girl. She just walks past them and towards the door, staring at them the whole way.
"Sorry, she's um... well she can be a bit odd," Miss Johnson chuckles. "Now, let me show you their work."
Newt glances at the window, watching as the children play outside. He watches as Alice walks past the playground and towards the tree, picking up a bunch of sticks. Tina eventually calls his attention back to Miss Johnson and he somewhat listens as she goes on about assignments.
As they survey the artwork, one piece stands out to Tina. "Who made this?" She asks pointing to the image.
Miss Johnson walks over and views the drawing. It was a drawing of a dress. Though a bit scribbly, as to be expected of a four-year-old, it was cute and a unique-looking green dress. "That's Alice's, the girl you saw earlier. She's a little fashionista," she explains. Tina notes this. Her sister loves fashion.
After this, she leads them outside to meet the children. "What about that boy over there?" Tina whispers to Newt, pointing out the kid playing on the swings.
