16: Rising conflict

A few days passed. You never talked to anyone other than Ryo . each day gets depressing for you.

However that day....

It was a gloomy Monday morning, the beginning of a terrible week and you were in a foul mood.

Your classmates were wandering around in a tired daze. They were yawning,moaning and complaining about their incomplete homework.

You saw Hailey sniffing and wiping her tears away as she told Koriko something. That's unusual.

When it was break time, ryo called you out,"Nee-chan, come let's have break together."

You said gloomily,"coming."
You dragged and shuffled your feet towards the door but you suddenly accidentally hit Hailey's table and a book fell and turned to a page where you could see what she wrote: My parents lost their jobs. it was like chicken-handwriting but you were able to read it.

Hailey who was sobbing shot up and saw you looking down at her book.
She quickly grab her book and coughed hard.

"Sorry, If you saw that..." then you saw her eyes filled up with well of tears," please, I beg you not to tell anyone about This secret."

Slowly, you nodded. Then she coughed harder and harder till you saw some trace of blood.

"Are .... you okay.....?"you asked.

"It's nothing, go ahead and have your break with Ryo."

Hailey's parents lost their jobs? Koriko once told you that her parents were well-paid all these years.how could they suddenly lose their jobs? You didn't want to tell anyone about this . You won't gain anything from telling it but more troubles will be caused.

"What's wrong? You got a troubled face," Ryo asked in concern.

"Oh...i am thinking about something ."

"Nee-chan... I know you are worried about Akashi and Hailey...these days they go out together and have fun-"

"stop, please ..." you looked at him pleadingly.

The next day, when you arrived in school , everyone was gossiping about Hailey's secret. what? I didn't tell anyone ! You wore a shocked expression on your face. Akashi went up to you and pushed you to the wall," what did you do?"

"I didn't ! I swear I didn't !"you cried out loud.

You immediately took a chance to escape to the toilet once Akashi let his gaurd down.

"I didn't do anything..." You mumbled as you splash cold water onto your face.

Then you heard a sob from one of the bathroom stalls behind. One of the doors to a particular bathroom stall was closed. Tentatively, you knocked on the door to the stall.

"Are you alright ?" You called. You heard a sniff,then, the sort slid open. Hailey stood there with her red-rimmed eyes, glaring at you.

"Why did you tell everyone about my secret?"she demanded, her eyes flashing with anger.

"I Didn't tell anyone ! I swear !"you reasoned out.

"If not you , then who? Koriko can't possibly tell anyone since she was my best friend!"

"Wha-"

"Stop backstabbing me! You are trying to sympathize with me? No. You told it and that's final!" She refused to listen any further of your reasoning .

She turned on the heel and stamped off. The last thing you saw was her back as she left the bathroom.

You returned to classroom and saw Koriko ...having a regretted face and concern for her friend.

People now accused you of telling the secret to everyone and causing her to be in this state. Behind the scenes, Actaully Someone heard your fight in the toilet.

"No!" You said as you kept your head down and covered your ears. people also started taunting Hailey too.

Days passed and you never saw Hailey in school .But only for that very one day she went back and cried. She seemed very depressed and her face looks extremely pale and she keep going to the toilet..and then she disappeared again. That was her last day we saw her. She had mysteriously disappeared without trace.

As you and Ryo walked past a newspaper stand, you caught sight of the daily newspaper.

On the front page of the newspaper was a printed a picture of a school girl and it was Hailey ! The headlines read,"Young Girl Committed Suicide."

You and Ryo gasped.

You wanted to find out the truth this time. you saw the address where the scene took place and you dashed there at your fastest pace. You saw a lot of people , police and investigators.

It seems that they are going to leave this to the forensics. You feel
A hope glimmer in you.

I want to find out the truth.

I want to end this .

I am going to be part of the forensics .
(Because why not)

Then one of the forensic people saw you , flashing with determination and anger . she asked you," you don't seem alright... are you her friend?"

"Miss! Can I -"

"What is it? call me dr. Kishomi. "

"Doctor! I want .. Want to be part of the forensics !" You pleaded her with hopeful eyes.

She looked at you and hesitated, she observed you and asked," what do you want after all?"

"I WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH." you stated determinely.

"Very well, you reminded me of someone of my apprentice who is similar like you. Hmmm you might be useful since you are her friend. you might be able to provide some information that we can't . I will try to see what I can do," she walked away and asked the big guy who looks like the boss or chief here.

Then , She walked towards you and said," very well, you may. But only for this case."

"Yes, doctor."
