I folded my legs up and put my arms around them, letting the tears roll down my face. Don't care about him? That's all I've done!
I breathed heavily and nearly jumped as I felt a hand on my back. I looked up and saw Derrel's concerned eyes staring at me. "Kira....Are you okay?" he asked slowly. "I saw what happened."
I looked away and breathed out angrily, "I'm fine."
"Okay," he said, sitting down next to me.
I didn't say anything for a long time, and then it all just came out. "You know? I've been looking out for him since forever. Even before he moved to New York! And now he tells me I don't care and he- he tried to...That skank?"
Derrel took a long pause. "I know what he can be like. But under all that frontin' he's just a punk, Kira," he said seriously. "But," he paused. Almost as if he didn't want to go on.
I looked up at him and wondered what he would say. "What?...What Derrel?"
"...He really likes you," he said with a kind of heavy breath. "You shouldn't judge him too quickly."
I just stared at him. Why did complimenting RJ make him look even better? I nodded my head and looked away. He stood up and put out his hand. "Now come on; you'll get your dress dirty."
I looked up at him and he smiled. I smiled and took his hand. "Thanks Derrel." As I stood and shook off the bottom of my dress, I didn't let go of his hand.
He eventually let go and laughed it off. "I can walk you home if you want," he offered, looking at me nervously.
"Okay," I said, taking his hand again.
He stared at me for a while and then we set off. I felt kind of nervous going back into the room where all that drama happened. Besides, Melissa had brothers, and I didn't feel like getting jumped today.
"We'll go through the back, that way..." he said, picking up on my anxiousness. I smiled and nodded.
As we went through the crowds of weirdos at the back, I saw a sight that nearly made me laugh. Nay and Lante were slow dancing together. I smiled and pointed to them. "I guess they made it happen," I said with a laugh.
"Yeah," he agreed. "About time."
We laughed and walked out the back door. As we came out into the cool night, I took a deep breath and shivered against the cold at the same time. "Are you cold?" he asked quickly.
"Just a little," I admitted, taking note of the goosebumps on my arms.
He put his arm around me and looked around awkwardly.
"Thanks," I said even more awkwardly. After the long pause I said, "You know her house is not actually that far away from our apartments."
"Yeah they're over there," he said, nodding his head to the left. He sighed heavily.
"What?" I asked, wondering why he seemed so distant.
"Nothin'," he said quietly.
"Come on Derrel," I said, poking him in the stomach. "What, does my breath stink?" I asked jokingly.
"No, no, you're perfect....I mean...Yeah," he said awkwardly. I smiled brightly and put my arm around his back. "It's just...I didn't imagine it like this, Kira."
