Rey had received a plethora of advice after returning to school. The most profound had come from Master Luke: "Don't just get married because there's a child. Leia and Han did that, and I think you can see for yourself how it worked out. Get married when you're ready. Get married when you know it's right."
Ailise ran back and forth into the receding waves, her tiny little three year old feet barely splashing water above her knees. Ben hovered just behind her, ready to snatch her up at the first sign of trouble. His black dress pants were rolled up, his tie hung loose. He looked good, and she wished for a moment it was just them, alone on this beautiful beach. His family and their friends were up the beach under a canopy, awaiting the wedding to begin. Rey didn't want Ben to straighten out his clothing for the ceremony. She liked him casual and rumpled.
They were on the shores of Ireland, at Inch Beach. It was a warm summer day. A perfect day for a wedding. Ben had returned to this beautiful country each summer since Ailise's birth to continue his professorial endeavors. This was the first summer either of them felt comfortable bringing Ailise.
"Rey!" called Rose. "Hurry up! The Minister is here!"
Ben scooped up Ailise, heedless of the wet, sandy little legs mussing up his fancy clothes, and turned to reach for Rey. She joined him, accepting his outstretched hand.
"Thank you," he said.
She raised an eyebrow in question.
"For this life. I love it."
"So do I," she said. And meant it.
It wasn't what she had expected. It wasn't anything she would have ever dared to hope for. But it was filled with people she loved.
Sorry it took me so long to get to this ending. I hope you all enjoyed the story. This was very difficult for me to write (as I've mentioned in the past), due to the very realistic nature of the AU. I think I'll stick with spaceships and the Force from now on. :)
