I finished in the bathroom and couldn’t find Astrid so I walked back downstairs.

“Calum,” Mr. Kane said. “Come here.”

I took a deep breath and walked into the kitchen.

“What are your intentions with my daughter?” he asked.

“We’re just friends, sir.” I said.

It wasn’t a lie. I may want to be more than that, but we’re not. I was telling the truth.

“Honey, don’t bother the young man.” Mrs. Kane said.

        Mr. Kane groaned.

“I’m just making conversation.”

“I’m hungry.” A blonde haired boy said, walking into the kitchen.

        He must be Jonah.

“Dinner is almost ready, Jonah.” Mrs. Kane said. “Go have a seat at the table.”

Jonah rolled his eyes and walked into the other room.

“Do you want a drink?” Mr. Kane asked.

“Um, just some water, please.” I said, remembering what Astrid told me.

“Dad, are you being nice?” Astrid asked, walking downstairs.

“Why does everyone in this damn house think I’m such a big jackass?” he grumbled.

“Language, Jim.” Mrs. Kane said.

Mr. Kane handed me a glass of water and I smiled.

“Thank you.”

Astrid poured herself a glass of water as well and then she took my hand and let me into the dining room.

“You can take Riley’s seat,” Astrid said. “She can sit next to Jonah tonight.”

“I don’t want to sit next to her.” Jonah said. “She’s been whining about everything all day.”

“Shut the fuck up, Jonah.” Riley said, walking into the dining room.

She sat down and looked at me.

“Hey Calum.” she said.

“Hey Riley.” I replied.

Mrs. Kane carried in a few dishes and set them on the table.

“Do you need any help?” I asked.

“I have it, thank you for asking.” Mrs. Kane said.

She walked back into the kitchen and came back with a few more dishes and placed them on the table. Mr. Kane walked into the room and sat down at one in of the table and Mrs. Kane sat down at the other side.

“Help yourself, Calum. There’s plenty to go around.” she told me.

I nodded and waited for someone else to start getting food. I was a guest so I didn’t want to go first.

“So Calum, tell me about yourself.” Mr. Kane said.

I shifted my gaze over to Astrid and she nodded.

“I’m 18,” I began. “I go to school with your daughters, that’s how we met. I have class with Astrid.”

“Not Riley?”

“I told you, I don’t have anyone in my classes.” Riley said.

“Right. What are you going to college for? Do you have a job?” Mr. Kane asked.
